 > CS> Ah, Raffles. Nice place ;-) Stayed there a few times.
 >
 > You actually _stayed_ there?! Wow! I have seen the place a few times,
 > but could never afford to even buy drinks there, even supposing I was

CS> Hehehe Yes, though only once at the true original one with the long
CS> bar. The other times, across the street at the newer 'raffles' which is
 CS> less pricey.
CS> On a ship at sea it's almost impossible to spend anything, so my 'fun
CS> money' would pile up and when we hit a port, I would enjoy it with
CS> things I normally could never afford.

Yes, of course. Sailors on shore leave are always welcome in many of
the establishments which exist to cater for their entertainment. (G)
I did an survey of some of those places in Mitchell St, Darwin, 3 weeks
ago, assisted by the other Carol. Kitty O'Shea's was too smoky for us,
but the gin and tonics in the Monsoon bar were judged the best.

CS> I've done the cheap too, but not as often. A lady alone is a bit
CS> wiser to upscale the accomodations for safety reasons as you might
CS> guess. If I had lots of buddies in the same place, I didnt worry too
 CS> much about it though.

Singapore is one of the safest cities I have visited, even at the level
that I usually live at. Some other places, like Manila or Los Angeles,
down-scaling would not be recommended for a lady travelling alone.

 > For our $3 tickets we were given a conducted tour of the place. It
 > even had a complete kitchen set up in Chinese Nonya style.

CS> Whaaa! I wanna go back and see that!

When your feet get too itchy to allow you to stay at home any longer,
Singapore would be a good place to return to, with family. All you
need is time and money. (Ha!)

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Singapore Chilli Crab
Categories: Mains, Seafoods, Singaporean, Asia-se, Charmaine
      Yield: 3 servings

      2 md Crabs
    125 ml Peanut oil
      2 ts Finely grated ginger
      1 ts Finely chopped garlic
      3 Red chillies; seed/chop
      3 tb Tomato ketchup
      3 tb Hot chilli sauce
      1 tb Sugar
      1 tb Light soy sauce
      1 ts Salt

Scrub away any mossy patches on the crabs, Remove hard top shell,
stomach bag and fibrous tissue. Chop each crab in 2 or 4, depending
  on size.

Heat a wok and add oil. When hot fry the crab pieces until they change
colour, turning them so they cook on all sides. Remove to a plate.
Turn heat low and fry the ginger, garlic and chillies, stirring
constantly, until they are soft and smell fragrant bu do not let them
brown. Add the tomato ketchup, chilli sauce, sugar, soy sauce and
salt. Bring to the boil, then return crabs to the wok and simmer in
the sauce for 3 minutes. If sauce reduces too much add a very little
  water. Serve with rice.
