Arriving in Darwin by sea, naturally your journey down Mitchell
Street, evaluating the pubs, would begin at O'Shea's end.  We began at
the other end.

In 1971, when I first visited there, it was satisfactorily sleazy,
with all vices catered for.  Then Lee Kwan Yew cleaned it up.

When I was there I stayed in Kowloon, travelling on the free to
seniors ferry to the Island, where my favourite area was the old
market area, with live fish of every kind offered for sale, killed and
cleaned while the customer waited.  Also little stalls selling an
amazing range of bric a brac.  I was tempted by a "Chairman Mao" alarm
clock, with the man waving his arm.

      Title: STEWED GREEN PAPAYA - REFOGADINHO DE MAMAO VERDE

      Yield: 4 Servings
 
      1 lg Mamao; OR
      2    Green papaya
      1    Onions; chopped
           Oil; for frying
      2    Garlic cloves; minced
      2 ts Tomato puree
           Sea salt
           Black pepper; ground fresh
 
  The mamao is a larger version if a papaya, with brilliant orange
  flesh. Unripe, it can be cooked as a vegetable, gently stewed, which
  is what refogadinho means. You can use unripe papaya if you can't get
  mamao. Serves 4
  
  1 Peel the skin from the mamao or papaya, cut in half and remove the
  large black seeds from the centre. Prick the flesh with a fork and
  leave to soak in a bowl of water for 1 hour to remove some of the
  astringency in the flavour. Drain and reserve.
  
  2 In a frying pan saute. the onion in a little oil until soft and
  turning golden. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Stir in
  the tomato puree and seasoning.
  
  3 Cut the mamao or papaya into 2.5 cm pieces. Stir into the mixture
  in the pan, cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Serve as a vegetable
  accompaniment with meat or chicken.
