Ärende: A little goes a long way
================================
Hello, Jeff.

Saturday April 04 2009 at 15:14, you wrote to RUTH HANSCHKA:

Eh, if you're careful, you can really regulate with your diet your A1C and
glucose levels pretty easily.

As a Type 2 diabetic (I inject insulin, no oral meds anymore), who's also got
high blood pressure, sleep apnea, GERD and a hiatial hernia, a good diet (which
I'm learning how to control) is very central to my health. However, giving up
foods is not my style...but if you practice moderation, you can still eat what
you like and not have it spike your blood glucose levels so badly. Here's what
I use for the above-mentioned foods:

Meat: I particularly like turkey burger. Lean, pretty tasty, but don't try to
grill it-it's too lean and tastes like crap when grilled. :) I balance between
that and fish. Most of the time, I don't eat much meat at all. But I do
occasionally go for a good helping of hamburger or steak. That is, if I can
chew it-I only have about 10 teeth left in my entire mouth. The rest have
either broken off at the gumline or have rotted out. (I'm hoping to be able to
afford to get dentures put in sometime soon.)

Milk: I'm not supposed to drink milk being allergic, but I do anyway. My wife
drinks goat's milk since she's lactose-intolerant (and lactose is a sugar). I
generally drink less than 8 oz. of milk at a time and when I do, it's skim
milk, but I've learned to like goat's milk too. I love almond milk but it's
quite rich and high in fat.

Cheese: I hate to say it, but I can't find anything to substitute for the real
thing. I use Smart Beat (I think that's it) on my sandwiches for work, but
it's not really cheese. More like something that tastes like cheese. This is
a hard one for me to give up as I REALLY like cheese.

Eggs: I use Egg Beaters (artificial) or egg whites instead of eating the whole
egg itself.

A lot of it for me is portion size, which for diabetics - and for obese
diabetics like me (I'm 5'9 and 235 lbs. currently-aiming for around 160 pounds
or less) is especially important. Here's a chart, developed by the Ohio State
University Medical Center, that I use:

===Cut===
Gadget - Approximate Size - Sample Foods
----------------------------------------
Tennis ball - Medium or small fruit - 1/2 to 2/3 cup measure

Hockey puck - 1 standard bagel - Bagel or English muffin

Tip of thumb to first joint - 1 teaspoon - 1 teaspoon salad dressing, peanut
butter, margarine, etc.

Ping pong ball or golf ball - 1 tablespoon - 1 tablespoon salad dressing,
peanut butter, margarine, etc.

Computer mouse - 1/2 cup - Baked potato, ground or chopped foods, 1/2 cup = 2
ounces

Monkey dish at restaurant - 1/2 cup - Fruits or vegetables

Match box - 1 ounce - 1 ounce meat or cheese

CD disk - 1 ounce - 1 ounce luncheon meat or cheese (e.g. slices)

4 dice - 1 ounce - 1 ounce cheese

Tube of lipstick - 1 ounce - 1 ounce chicken fingers, string cheese

3 dominoes - 1.5 ounces - 1.5 ounces meat or cheese

Deck of cards, bar of soap, cassette tape - 3 ounces or 3/4 cup - Meat or 3/4
volume; 3/4 cup = 3 ounces
===Cut===

Some thing to remember too is drinking a lot of water (eight 8 oz. glasses a
day for me). That will help the A1C too as the water helps flush things out.

If you eat a lot of salt, that's bad for males, as we tend to hold our water
weight more than women with a high-sodium diet...and if you're eating canned
anything, that's a lot of salt.

Anyhow, hope that's something you might find interesting. It's helped me a lot
- I'm losing about five pounds a week currently and am hoping to lose 100
pounds by the end of this year - and maybe it can help you and your daughter
also.

I just mowed my 1/2 acre lawn today. It took me two hours to do, but doggone
it, it got done (and it's on a pretty steep slope too). Trying to get more
exercise in is helping things a lot for losing weight.

Later,
Sean
