Ärende: Stuff White People like
===============================
Hello, JIM.

Saturday June 13 2009 at 21:01, you wrote to me:

JW> They have some cool stuff and it's fun to experiment but you can do
JW> that without being all pretentious about it.

That was the word (pretentious) I was looking for yesterday. In midtown
Atlanta, that is the keyword to living there -- that you're better than
everyone else because you live in a "cool and hip" part of town.
Whatever...most of the people I ran into I wanted to just backhand some sense
into them around there. Sheesh.

But like you said, it's fun. I also like going to ALDI to shop (which owns
Trader Joe's if I've been told correctly). Cheap, decent stuff that's
"off-brand" and the best price of milk in town. Sadly, the closest ALDI to us
now is an hour's hilly drive south in Asheville, NC. The ironic thing was that
the entire time we lived in Douglasville, the closest ALDI to us was 30 miles
away across the street from my mother-in-law.

A week before I moved, I was going through some back streets in a town about 10
minutes from us and lo and behold, there was an ALDI. <G>

JW> The quality is often better than equivalent chain store stuff. I
JW> shop up market when I can but I hunker down to beans and rice, pork,
JW> cabbage and potatoes when I'm overdrawn, which has been almost all
JW> the time since last October, when the global credit crisis and stock
JW> market crash started to affect the diamond mines and Yellowknife
 JW> housing.

We rarely get anything fancy these days. It's just hard to find here and even
though we're both working, we're barely making it as it is. Since I got my
"promotion" and went from a seven mile round trip to work to a 50 mile round
trip to work -- sans a raise -- the gas has been killing us ($2.50 a gallon
which can really be eaten up fast). The thing is that neither of us want to
look for other work - it's so hard to find work up here that we're both
thankful we're both working full-time.

SD>> That being said, we also liked going to Harry's (now Whole Foods)
SD>> and other organic places...you could find some neat fruit and
SD>> veggies there that were harder to find. Whole Foods has a huge
SD>> chocolate section that we'd always stop at when we went there.

JW> Ah ha. You're not totally redneck hill billy after all. [g]

No, no. I've never considered myself a "redneck hillbilly" even though I have
the tiniest of a twang in my voice now. After being married to an Okie
(Oklahoman) and now my Georgia peach as well as have been living in the deep
South since 1995, one does pick up a few things. <G> My wife has no accent
since both of her parents are Northeners (locals just say "Yanks", really!),
but since she was born and raised in Georgia, she has this thick twangy accent
she can turn on and off if she wants. She normally hides it and refuses to
turn it on, but when she does, it's hilarious to hear her talk...you'd swear
she just came a'walkin' out of a hollar out here.

But she and I do like our chocolate, but I eat very little of it. I prefer
bittersweet (real dark) chocolate and have been know to nosh on baking
chocolate before. Don't ask me why I do, but I always have. Milk and "white"
chocolate are too damn sweet for me.

JW> More Stuff White People Like: Hummus

My wife /loves/ hummus. :P

JW> When it comes to food, all white people are either allergic to/or
JW> have stopped eating everything you consider delicious. It's a good
JW> idea to come to grips with the concept, because it will save you a
 JW> lot of headaches.

Hahahaha, so true! However, I just eat what I want and ignore the reactions. I
am more careful because of my weight, but the allergies haven't stopped me too
much.

JW> All white people like hummus. In fact, if you find a white person
JW> who does not like hummus then they probably just haven't tasted it
JW> or they are the wrong kind of white person. In either case, they
JW> are probably not someone that you want to know.

ROTFLMAO!

JW> Wait one week and relive the story with different white people, it
JW> will make them laugh and secretly wish to be invited to your next
 JW> hummus eating party.

That sounds like people I met who lived in downtown Atlanta. They had to have
everything specially prepared.

JW> ... What the hell is Hummus?

According to my dictionary: ". . . a Middle Eastern puree of chickpeas, garlic,
etc." I've had it before and it's actually pretty damn tasty on crackers (no
pun intended :). There's many different types of hummus from what I've seen. I
happen to adore chickpeas, so depending on how loaded with extra stuff the
hummus is is how much I'll like or dislike it.

It seems I have a few recipes for hummus in my MM database, so here's #1:

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Hummus #1
 Categories: Appetizers
      Yield: 6 servings

      1 tb Safflower Oil
      2 tb Chopped Onion
           Clove garlic, Minced
    1/4 c Minced Fresh Parsley
      1 ts Basil
    1/4 ts Ground Coriander
    1/4 ts Oregano
    1/4 ts Black Pepper
15 oz Can Drained Chick Peas
      3 tb Lemon Juice
      2 tb Toasted Sesame Seeds
      1 ds Cumin

GARNISH: lemon wedges, cherry tomatoes, or fresh parsley sprigs (opt)
In a small skillet, heat oil; saute onion and garlic until onion is
softened. Add seasonings. Stir just long enough to soften parsley. In
food processor, combine rinsed and drained chick peas and lemon
juice; process until smooth. Stir in onion and herb mixture; stir in
sesame seeds. Spoon into serving bowl. Top with garnish if desired.
VARIATIONS: 1. Substitute 15-oz can Great Northern beans for chick
peas. Use only 2 T lemon juice, since this is a moister bean. 2.
  Replace chick peas with 1/2 lb firm tofu (1 cup) and 1/2 cup tahini;
use only 1 T lemon juice and add 1 T soy sauce.

MMMMM
