Around here, only some of the more expensive Japanese restaurants have
any "snob appeal".  We have a fairly large and diverse Asian population
in the area, so we have a LOT of different asian restaurants.  Sushi is
common at any chinese/asian buffet, as well as featured at various
restaurants.  So there's a wide range of quality for the sushi as well. 
One of what is probably a "snob appeal" place has some really BAD sushi,
I've been told.  I probably wouldn't have checked the place out anyway,
it's called Piranha...  ;)  Oh, and you can get halfway decent sushi
(what my son calls survival sushi) at most Wegmans markets...  :)   So
much for it being snob stuff around here... (G)

Oh, my!   Maybe I'm not white after all... (G)  (But I've known the
type, sad to say...)
