Hello, MICHAEL.

Monday June 29 2009 at 17:00, you wrote to me:

I've never understood that either. I've worked in the fast food business long
enough to know that the customer is the reason why I'm there and how my salary
is being paid. I guess to a lesser person it wouldn't occur to them.

It was more that we were taking up his precious time that he'd rather be
spending on a table filled with cute girls that he was hitting on more than a
tennis racket at a tennis match. It really made me mad especially when I'd
driven 400+ miles that day and I was tired, hungry and wanted to just relax.

ML> Terrific. What kind of Field Day?

Field Day, sponsored by the American Radio Relay League for over 70 years, is
an 24-hour long exercise where we hams practice our emergency communication
skills. The ARRL doesn't call it a contest, but it really is: the goal is to
make as many contacts using a very short "exchange". We operate on emergency
power, such as generators or batteries.

Our club was in a very prominent location this year; we operated on the porch
of a cabin built in 1776 at a local park. The mayor of Johnson City stopped by
Sunday morning and was impressed (although there were only six of us there;
everyone else was asleep). The evening before, nearly 60 people turned out for
the free cookout that was put on by the club. The food was donated to us by a
catering service run by a friend of one of the club members and the drink was
donated to us by Pepsi. I brought my own soda for my no-sugar tastes.

It was /hot/ and terribly humid, but it was worth it. I was a "station
captain", meaning that my radio and associated equipment were being used as one
of two stations. There was a CW (Morse code) and SSB (voice) station - mine
was the SSB station. My little radio did very well as that was the first time
it'd been heavily used.

I even was able to work W1AW, the station of the American Radio Relay League's
headquarters, sometime in the late afternoon Saturday.

I towed the club's trailer to and from the FD location also. I forgot I could
still drive with a trailer attached. It'd been a while since I had a trailer
attached to one of my vehicles.

Nevertheless, it was a fun day and Maura said she enjoyed it although she
didn't get on the air herself. I wound up being there from start to end (I did
come home and sleep overnight Sat/Sun as I cannot stay up overnight anymore). I
learned a lot and learned I had a passion for "working DX" or talking to people
all over the world.

I could go on and on, but this isn't the place for it. Pictures will be posted
on our club's website soon as well as a few short videos I made using my little
digital camera. I'll post the URL when they get up there.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Atomic Bread
 Categories: Breads
      Yield: 1 servings

      1 pk Dry yeast
    1/2 c Warm water
    1/8 ts Ground ginger
      2 tb Honey
     13 oz Can evaporated milk
      1 ts Salt (optional)
      2 tb Oil
      4 To 4 1/2 cups whole wheat
           -flour

  Makes 1 large loaf

Dissolve yeast in the warm water in large mixing bowl. Blend in the
ginger and 1 Tbsp of the honey. Let stand in a warm place until the
mixture is bubbly (about 15 minutes). Stir in the remaining honey,
and the milk, salt, and oil. With mixer on low speed (or with a
wooden spoon) beat in the flour 1 cup at a time, mixing well after
each addition. If you are using amixer, beat in the last cup of flour
with a wooden spoon. The dough should be heavy but too sticky to
  knead.

Place dough in a 2-pound, WELL-GREASED coffee can. Cover with greased
plastic lid. At this point, you may freeze the dough if you want to
and bake it at a later time.

To bake, let stand, covered in a warm place until the dough rises and
pops off the lid. This will take 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Discard the lid
and bake at 350 F for 1 hour. The crust will be very brown. Brush
  the top lightly with butter.

Let the entire bread and can cool for 5 to 10 minutes on a wire rack,
then loosen the crust around the edge of the can with a thin knife
and slide the bread from the can. Cool it in an upright position on
  the wire rack.

VARIATION: Add to the yeast mixture 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 tsp
nutmeg. With the final addition of flour, add 1/2 cup raisins and 1/2
  cup chopped walnuts.
