Ärende: Diner Steaks
====================
 -=> On 07-07-09  08:24,  Michael Loo <=-

DS> One of the worst steaks I have had was at the Double-T

ML> Steaks just aren't diner fare. Fish either. I've had

So I now realize:-}}

ML> occasion to patronize a couple diners, partially because
ML> my brother likes to eat late and doesn't like Chinese. The
ML> food is generally kind of mediocre (better, I find, at
ML> Silver than Double-T), but you can do okay if you get
 ML> burgers or stewish things.

Gail likes Double-T's liver & onions. There are a variety of things I
have had and like. We both like the prices:-}} Some of their desserts
look fabulous, but we've never had the room to try one.

I've not heard of or seen a Silver.

DS> IIRC, It was a 12 or 16 oz porterhouse for about $12.

ML> Way, way too thin. Porterhouse should be cut thick, with
ML> about 2 lb being the minimum for a proper steak - 24 or 26
ML> oz in a pinch, if you like your meat medium.

It was probably also cooked on the type of large flat grill used for
hamburgers, Philly cheese steak, etc.

The Porterhouse we often get from BJ's are moderately thick, about one
inch or more and 24 ounce each. It usually is more than the two of us
eat for one meal. Costco has a tendency to cut their steaks even
thicker. We've not had a Porterhouse from them, but perhaps someday.

ML> I remember when a dollar an ounce would get you a steak at
ML> a respectable restaurant. Now it's like two; three at the
 ML> fancy places.

And at our house, the Porterhouse runs about $0.45 per ounce.

Title: Tips for Beating the Heat - or At Least Surviving

      9 ea Great ideas

~- I grew up on the edge of the Mojave desert, have lived in the
tropics in the summer (without air conditioning), and currently live
in one of the most miserable summer climates known to mortal man. May
I offer a few suggestions here?

  1. DO NOT go out in the heat if at all possible. The old saying
about Mad Dogs and Englishmen is correct. People in hot climates
either hover next to the AC or stay indoors during the worst times
(the siesta is one of the sanest customs known to man).

  2. Keep the air circulating (fans, cross ventilation, whatever you
can devise). Wear LOOSE clothes but something that covers most of
your body (it protects you from the inevitable effects of the sun).
Also wear a hat if you must go out to keep your brain from suffering
from the effects of the heat.

  3. When I was a kid, my mother/grandmother used to use something
called "hot weather" cologne to fight the heat. It was simply a
high-alcohol toilet water that they stored in the refrigerator and
splashed on their body as needed (with a special emphasis on pulse
points). Haven't seen the stuff in years, but any high-alcohol body
splash (Jean Nate, whatever) would work, or in a pinch, refrigerate
plain rubbing alcohol and use it. You won't smell great, but it will
  work.

  4. Baby powder is a Godsend. Use it frequently to absorb
  persperation and prevent heat rash/chafing.

  5. Eat lightly, but EAT. Your body needs the fuel to cool itself.

  6. Don't be afraid of sweating. It's unattractive, but it's the body's
natural defense against the heat. If you're fastidious, use a
deodorant that does NOT contain an antipersperant -- you want, and
NEED to sweat. When you STOP sweating, it's time to be concerned.
Immediately get yourself into an air-conditioned environment (in a
pinch, visit the local air-conditioned grocery store, shopping mall,
  wherever).

  7. Drink LOTS of fluids. Water is best, or if you're concerned about
electrolytes, Gatoraid or something similar. Avoid cola drinks, tea,
or anything with alcohol or caffine. Stimulants are NOT what you
need. Lemonaide is excellent as are other fresh fruit-based drinks.
  Also avoid alcohol.

  8. Get some potassium (it prevents heat cramps). Banannas, orange
juice are excellent sources. Do NOT use salt tablets unless
recommended by your doctor. They cause water retention and that can
be a BIG problem if you're elderly or have high blood pressure.

  9. Cool baths/showers are great, but do NOT use really cold water if
you are elderly, or have any physical problems. Again, the cure
could be worse than the original problem.

Best wishes to anyone suffering from this unreasonable high heat. For
us, it's been a HOT, but not unendurable, Summer. I can really
sympathize with folks that aren't prepared for it, or haven't
  experienced it before.
