 DS> Several of us have made plans that include not being there until
 DS> Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.  That pretty much rules out a
 DS> Friday picnic at this late date.

Fine with me. Speaking of which, who's going to the banquet,
which I will confirm for Friday night.

I have explicit word from Nancy Backus + 1 finicky guest
and implied consent from the Shipps, the Fords, the Sacs,
and me. I've not heard yea or nay from anyone else that
I can recall.

One request for Moo shu and/or cashew chicken. No other
ideas will mean my choice, which could be durian pork,
durian spring rolls, durian custard, and durian. I am
also entertaining requests for "no durian."

The price will probably be 25 a person as usual. This will
get us less fancy food than last time, but there will be
plenty, and it will be good.

 DS> What progress have you made on acquiring visitor parking permits? 
 DS> That might help a lot.

Still working on it. Unfortunately, nobody in the building
seems to have bothered to get the maximum legal number of
permits (2 per unit).

 DS> We may end up having to use a taxi from the motel -- can you find out
 DS> what that would cost?

That wouldn't be such a great idea. One could park in the
museum mall lot, which always has plenty of spaces, and
either walk (10 min) or take a taxi from there. Or ...
as it turns out ...

There is no Maritime Festival on Sunday. This
per the National Park Service (whose property it
is on) and the Peabody Essex Museum (which is
sponsoring it). I got in touch with both, and
they say Friday and Saturday only. 

All the websites that claim there is something going,
including that of the city of Salem, are wrong.

Here are the things that are actually happening
on Sunday the 2nd.

0900 First Annual 5K Road Race - would interfere
with people trying to get to the house by car but
not apparently by foot from either garage;

0700-1100 Witch City Triathlon - Forest River Park,
which is way far away;

1100-1300 Tour-A-Truck - Salem Willows, which is
way far away;

1600-1800 Howlywood Dog Show - Salem Common, which
is pretty close, but, come on.

It looks as though my original contact at City
Hall was right - there isn't going to be a whole
lot going on on Sunday.

P.S. I don't know who was boneheaded enough to
schedule both a 5K and a triathlon at the same
time.

Peach, pear, quince, or apple pickle
cat: pickle
yield: 1 batch

1/2 lb sugar
1 c vinegar
1 lb fruit
1 cinnamon stick
1/8 ts nutmeg

Dissolve sugar in vinegar. Add fruit and cinnamon; bring to the
boil and cook "until you can stick a straw through it." Season
with nutmeg if desired. Let stand 9 days, draining liquid daily
and boiling it and returning it to the peaches. Multiply recipe
by the number of pounds of fruit you have.
