Indeed. Weather can put a "damper" on things; luckily, for the
weekend proper it looks like the echo picnic has dodged a bullet
this day.

Could be interesting (a challenge for me, with status on two
airlines, but a trial for others). But I imagine you'd get a
few drivers - though conditions could get so bad that even
driving would be tough.

It means a 1-2% discount, assuming you actually use the miles
eventually (I have amassed enough Alaska miles to go around the
world but have seldom used any). The airlines are counting on
people forgetting about their miles or hoarding them forever.
I've used 170000 miles this year on United and US Air.

Low-salt is good as a goal; low-cholesterol is dubious.

The research indicates that for many people, diet has scanty
effect. Of course, it's hard to generalize. I do best on a
high-protein, high-fat diet, with few carbos, but if I have a
couple pieces of cake or slurps of sorbet (or crunchies from
fried clams), it's all bad.

What are you doing this weekend using the time blocked out for
the picnic?

FALLEN ANGEL CAKE

yield: 1

1 angel food cake (store-bought or homemade)
1 small bottle Frangelico (hazelnut liqueur)
1 pint whipping cream
Slivered almonds
Confectioners' sugar
Vanilla extract
Honey

Slice the cake into three equal pieces along top, middle and bottom. Place
the bottom layer on a large platter and drizzle it with Frangelico. Don't
soak it, but do be generous.

Whip the cream until fluffy. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon
Frangelico and enough confectioners' sugar to make it taste sweet.

Spread about 1/4 cup whipped cream over the first layer of cake. Sprinkle a
generous portion of slivered almonds over the top. Add the next layer and
add Frangelico, whipped cream and almonds. Do the same with the top layer.
Smooth whipped cream down the side, and place some almonds on the side. Add
an extra layer of whipped cream on top of the almonds on the top layer.
Drizzle honey on top. Cover the cake, and put it into the freezer for a
couple hours.
