Midnight snack.

An about 12-oz filet saved from my porterhouse; a Wegmans hot
Italian sausage (as usual, not very spicy at all, wholesome,
but a bit lean and dry); a slice of sausage and olive pizza
leftover from a previous meal. I suspect something is going on
in the pizza cheese industry, as some recent pizzas, as this
one, have had a very creamy Provel-type topping, but they cost
me no greps, no matter how much I underdo the pills. I had one
pill and was fine with this one, and it was a huge slice.

I cast about for wine for this meal and found two open bottles.

Gascon Malbec 08 (Mendoza) is a mediocre wine, but this bottle
had turned into a great vinegar, fruity and spicy with great depth
of flavor and a bit more acid than your commercial product - I
cautioned Annie next day not to toss it, but to use it as a marinade
or salad dressing;

Howell Mountain Zinfandel 03 (Napa) - spicy, raisiny, a little
herbal, quite a decent wine though it would have been better 3
or 4 years ago.

I also had a Yuengling Light.

Next day.

Annie had been talking with the laundry lady, who gave her a
recipe for smothered okra, which got her to thinking, so she
went to the store and got a bag (1 1/2 lb - a lot of the stuff),
which got fried. I taught her a new trick. She dips the sliced
weed into self-raising (or self-rising, as it is sometimes called)
cornmeal; I use an egg wash first, which helps the starch stick.
What I did. A bowl of sliced okra. Break two (medium) eggs into
the bowl, mush around with your fingers, take a fistful at a
time and bread them and plop them into hot bacon fat. Yum.

To go with this, we had gumbo from a box (just add water and
simmer - I found this a bit weak, so I sauteed red Bell, onion,
and celery, and added it - much improved, in my estimation)
made with Johnsonville andouille (wholesome, very mild); and
a 3-lb bag of Chinese crawfish (very spicy, as if to mask the
over-the-hillishness of some of the bugs; otherwise mediocre).
This last was dumped in the steamer and steamed up for 15 or so.

Some stickyish rice made in the cooker went nicely.

Annie had made a blueberry pie. It went uneaten, to be savored
another day. There were also piecrust cookies, a more manageable
treat.
