Truth - a time to be vulnerable and a time to be strong.

It's more that the guest room is upstairs, and one has to go past
the other bedrooms to get there, and she retires early. As far as
prognosis goes, the doctors seem very optimistic (it was a large
tumor, as these things often are, but encapsulated - the chemo
was prophylactic), but Lee, not known for subtlety, called their
son in and said "be nice to your mother, she's not going to be here
five years from now" (he told me this as though it were funny!).

He says he's symptom free; the shrinker didn't seem to agree. It was
a fairly productive chat, mostly related to practical things that
might help Jonathan's everyday functioning.

If you know that there's likely to be something on your platter that you
aren't going to like, it should be possible to request a substitute.

LIME-MARINATED MACKEREL WITH ORANGE-CUCUMBER RELISH
cat: fish, main, relish
serves: 4

4 mackerel fillets
- 8 oz ea (sub kingfish, pompano, or salmon)
s&p
6 Tb fresh lime juice
2 navel oranges, peeled, seeded, bite-size pieces
1 lg cucumber, peeled, 1/4" half-moon slices
1/2 sm red onion, halved and thinly sliced
2 Tb vegetable oil
3 Tb red-wine vinegar
3 Tb orange juice
1 ts red pepper flakes (optional)
2 Tb finely chopped fresh mint
2 Tb olive oil

Marinate fish with lime juice, salt, pepper for 2-4 hr
(no more than 2 hr for salmon).

Make the relish: Combine remaining ingredients except olive oil.
Season, mix well, cover, and set aside.

Preheat broiler. Pat fillets dry, brush with olive oil, and
season. Broil, skin side up, about 5-7 min total. Do not turn.
To check for doneness, slide a sharp, thin knife into one
piece, and peek inside. Serve, accompanied by relish.
