Stomach acids are far stronger than vinegar, so it is probable that
there is some other quality than the degree of acidity which has the
beneficial anti-cramp effect. I have noticed that Australian vinegars
never state the acetic acid content, but the imported Italian ones
always do (usually 6%). Do your vinegars give that information?

-> That's right - if Joan were here she might be able
-> to weigh in, but as far as I recall there are other
-> factors than simple acidity - the reactiveness of
-> the ions in the acid in question with calcium or
-> whatever the stones are made of and the solubility
-> of the products of the reaction.

HN> Where is that girl anyway??

Still in Amherst. She has had troubles trying to run old programs on
her newer computers.

-> "Social networking sites (such as Facebook), cell-phone
-> text-messaging (: lol), and Internet connections at the
-> local coffee shop, have made it easier for people to
-> stay in touch with distant friends. Social psychologists
-> originally expected to find that these technological
-> innovations would yield the usual benefits found with
-> face-to-face contacts, but results have been mixed. One
-> study suggested that increased use of the Internet comes
-> at a cost to relationships with family and friends and
-> results in increases in depression and loneliness.

My experience is that a mix of personal contact and internetting is
the ideal. The occasional face to face contact is needed to reinforce
the mental image of the person at the other end of the line.

-> Melanie Green and her colleagues note that people are
-> drawn to Internet communication because it is easy, less
-> risky than talking to real strangers, and immediately
-> gratifying. Over the long haul, however, these researchers
-> found that an increasing ratio of such 'ersatz social
-> engagements' to real conversations tended to decrease
-> general life satisfaction. However, a study of the online
-> network Facebook indicated that people who used this
-> service did reap benefits of enhanced social capital, and
-> this was particularly true of those with low self-esteem

For some years I have been involved with disability matters, and have
assisted severely disabled people to use computers and bulletin
boards. Many of these people are unable to speak, or can only speak
with great difficulty, but can still use a keyboard. Some have needed
keyboard covers with holes over each key to make it easier to hit the
right key, while others, quadriplegics, use a mouth-stick to hit the
keys of a vertical keyboard. Initially bbses, and now Internet
communications have allowed these people to break out of the mental
confines of their particular limitations, and to communicate with
"normal" people and others who are in a similar situation to
themselves. Their world is no longer the 4 walls of a room and a TV.

To my mind, this has been the greatest benefit of computerised talk.
