================================
Hi Ruth,

-> RH> I know families where they taught all the boys to bake, never mind
-> RH> just cook. SMART parents.

-> Very smart parents. My parents didn't do that. Even my sisters didn't
-> know how to cook as well as I did before leaving home. My younger

RH> Me neither, come to that. I was an OK survival cook, but no great
 RH> shakes.

I started out basic but now can pull out all the stops and go super
gourmet quite often if our budget and waist lines would allow.
Tonight's supper is simmering on the stove--a beef stew. Used to be,
I'd make it with just beef, a bit of onion, carrot & potatoes. This one
has the beef, a lot of onion & green pepper, a can each of tomato sauce
& diced tomato and a good sized sprig of fresh rosemary right now,
besides salt & pepper. Later, potatoes, carrots, celery and maybe
mushrooms will go in. I'll pull out the rosemary and thicken it with a
flour/water mix, serving it with biscuits.

-> I think he did learn some cooking basics. As for my older brother, he
-> didn't know anything. To this day I think he lives off of whatever he
-> can microwave (used to be toaster oven) or otherwise fix without "real
-> cooking". My sisters can cook now but I'm 99.98% sure that it is pretty
-> pedestrian for the most part.

RH> Their pumpkin pies are made by Mrs Smith? I'm going to cook down my
RH> own pumpkin this year. Frozen pie forsooth.

Don't know what my older brother does, now that he's in Florida. He
used to go to my parents house when he lived in NY, as well as my
younger brother and most often my youngest sister & her family. My mom
made pumpkin pie; my brothers had a long standing tradition of playing
Tic Tac Toe with each other in their pieces. I suspect my other sister
does go with the frozen pies; I would make them when we lived in AZ and
would go there. My nephews are both pumpkin pie lovers; when I left one
there the year Robert was born, they had it polished off before their
dad could get himself another piece. Most of the time I've used fresh
(the Halloween) pumpkin, if I've not had that, it's been canned but
never a frozen pie.

-> RH> Definitely. I wrote them a note saying I would not be buying their
-> RH> product until the offending ingredient was removed.

-> And they'll probably send you a coupon for a free product. (G)

RH> More like "we'll keep your suggestion on file". If they had enough
RH> letters on hand they might figure out that they could make more money
 RH> with the
 RH> stuff out of there.

Don't count on it, not everybody is a label reader and concerned about
it. Remember what happened when you did the same thing with Yoplait?

-> RH> Get any Big Lots?

-> Haven't seen any here, could be some down nearer to Raleigh. We did have
-> one in Savannah we'd hit up from time to time.

RH> I've heard of stores that sell outdated and label-free goods too, but
 RH> never seen one.

I was in something like that with a friend when we were in Savannah.
Not much to it tho.

I did however score a pound of brown sugar in a
RH> Salvation Army. No one knew how it got on the shelves, but there it
RH> was. They threw it in my bag because they couldn't sell it legally as
 RH> far as anyone knew.

Odd, wonder if it was in something that came as a donation.

Catch you later,
Ruth
