No, it would not do in my parent's house.  Their dog has a habit of
sprawling at the bottom of the stairs from the 2nd floor to the first.
He's a trip hazard but my mom & dad still keep him around.  he barks at,
but doesn't do anythig else with the bears.

It must have been a really heavy door!  We had a calico (cute, loved pop
corn) for a while in Swansboro.  Found a new home for her when we took
over managing the apartment building; we couldn't be breaking the no
pets rule as managers.  The owner and former manager let us keep her
under the "just as long as we don't know you have her" condition.  If
they'd had a complaint, Inge would have been gone faster.

Sam was an indoor dog so matting wasn't much of a problem.  He was a
buff color.  Our across the street neighbors had a black cocker, also
named Sam.

They will get over it, as will Toby, and all will be fine.
