Hi Janis,

JK> Yes, it is.. it's good to move those muscles again.. even though it
 JK> may hurt some :)

Yes, and the only way to keep the from freezing up is to keep using
them, even tho it may hurt.

JK> And NOW we're getting a cold snap... :( Oh well.

We got it too. But, by the end of the week, the weather folks are
saying 90 again for us, which is too hot. Can't win around here. (G)

JK> > Ok, but on days you go but can't do much in the line of exercising,
JK> ask > about nutrition or something else. Do the exercises you can,
JK> then talk > out the issues with the PT.

JK> No, this isn't like that. She's a physical therapist only (head of
JK> her department, aamof). It will be of more benefit to me I think, if I
JK> keep trying to do some at home, and then go to added sessions later.
JK> I think you may be thinking of say, times when you had to re-build
JK> strength in maybe your wrists, etc.. that takes time, and yes, you
JK> wouldn't want to skip those sessions.. in this "remap" thing, she's
JK> essentially truly teaching me how to walk again. By showing me the
JK> exercises, and working with them, my brain is umm.. remembering what
JK> to do. It sounds stupid, but its because the connections in my brain
JK> to do the simplest things have been eroded - sometimes axons are
JK> totally destroyed, cut off.. I think of it like the patterning we read
JK> about years and years ago... When I brought patterning up to her that
JK> day, she agreed with me, her aim with me was very similar. That path
JK> doesn't work anymore, we need to use this path to get there.

I see. and to train the brain you need to keep up the patterning (or
remapping) if I'm reading you right. I had to learn how to walk again
after I tore up my right knee and was on crutches for 6 months. It's
amazing how fast the brain forgets things like that; it also remembers
new things quite well with enough re-enforcement.

>> Yes, I'll have to keep up with it if I want to continue walking on my
>> own.

JK> > As, I'm sure you do. My dad is trying to get by without help in the
JK> > house but does keep his walker and cane handy. They got a 2nd walker
JK> so > they wouldn't have the problems of schlepping one up & down
 JK> stairs.

JK> Being the vane thing that I am, I rejected the walker.. But actually
JK> it's not that.. it's too easy. I told her, no, I don't want to just
JK> give in and use that contraption, it's too easy. I want you to teach

It's also harder to do things like cooking with a walker since you have
to use it with both hands. They (walkers) aren't as easy as they look
to use as my dad found out. (G)

JK> me to use a cane if I have to without tripping myself AND Ron (haha)
JK> but I have to admit it does help :) That's why I was so upset at the
JK> insurance company this week.. hopefully that drug will help. They just
JK> play the waiting game :(

With a cane you have one hand (same side as the injury) free. I use one
because of the problems with the left foot--that means my left hand is
the free one. Helps, I'm left handed so I can stir a pot on the stove
with the dominant hand. What doesn't help is that it was the wrist that
broke worse and I had the elbow shatter so that arm is weaker. Arund
the house I generally don't use the cane so I'll stir the pot with
whichever hand is more comfortable. It also helps in chopping something
up to have both hands free. Let's hope the insurance company pulls thru
for you this week--they should have your doctor's nice little note by
now.

JK> > We were moving soon so I had to use up my flour and such like. We
JK> had > enough baked goodies on hand already and these folks had worked
JK> with me > for several months. Made their day. (G)

JK> No doubt :) I worked in a hospital and know the wonderous benefits of
JK> patient "thankfulness". I remember a really nice woman who I'd stop
JK> in on often because I was worried about her.. we talk about all kinds
JK> of things - she was quite the intellectual... she insisted on giving
JK> me perfume (THIS is the one you should be wearing (g)), bath powder...
 JK> money :) it didn't matter that I'd
JK> tell her I couldn't accept her gifts, and tried to give them back to
JK> her... she'd hand them off to me in a way that was sneaky (G). She
JK> was just so appreciative of attention and care. I guess that's the
JK> other side of what you were talking about :)

Sounds like it. I also sent goodies in with Steve for sharing at work
different times. One time I sent some chocolate chip cookies, turned
out the battalion commander liked oatmeal raisin better (everybody else
enjoyed the chocolate chip). So, the next goodies were oatmeal raisin
cookies. (G)
