Ärende: And Sew On [1]
====================================================================
Hi Janis,
>> outweigh hers and that I've got all the tools to even make patterns
>> here if I need to. She also knew that I wouldn't do it all in 'one
JK> > Same here, with both girls, even tho they both have machines. They
JK> like
JK> I saw a good deal on a brother machine, so I ordered it for Lauren..
Brother is, surprisingly a decent name brand. They co-brand with Singer
so they share a lot of features. We got Rachel one when Robert was
born; a couple of years later, got me the same model. That's my "go
with" (classes, travel, loan out, etc) machine.
JK> she has made some neat things with it.. One was a Komono dress for a
JK> costume party in Ithaca - it came our really pretty. I was impressed
JK> (g). Other than that kind of thing, she doesn't really sew much.
Both Rachel & Deborah go on fits and starts with sewing. They've never
done anything too fancy but, at least know how to use the machine. Some
of their friends don't even know how to sew on a button.
JK> > to do basically patternless projects--dog beds, whole cloth quilts,
JK> etc.
JK> Understand.. well, they probably don't have a lot of free time to do
JK> much more. I remember sometimes working very late at night on clothes
JK> for my son and daughter, but I could do that since I only worked after
JK> the kids started school pretty much.. I still made my daughter pretty
JK> dresses for kindergarten, but I don't remember continuing much after
JK> that, for the kids at least :)
OTOH, I only worked part time, for a couple of years, when we were in
Germany. I'd go to work after the girls went to school and be home
before they got home. Sometimes it meant grabbing a quick lunch from a
bratwurst stand but I could eat it on the bus. (G)
JK> > Last time I was out in Las Vegas, I helped Rachel cut down a dust
JK> ruffle > from a queen size bed to one that fit her day bed. Then it
JK> was "Mom, > will you please sew it?" since she was about ready to have
JK> Sarah and it > was awkward for her to sew that much fabric.
JK> Oh I can just imagine that :( Good thing you were there to help!
Agreed! I also did some cooking that David asked me to repeat before I
went back to GA. His favorite was the meat loaf I made with sauteed
bell peppers and onions in it. That was an experiment; when I repeated
it for Steve, he suggested I continue to make it that way. (G)
JK> > I tend to go in fits and spurts as well. I finished the top to
JK> Sarah's > quilt a few months ago but haven't put it together yet. Now
JK> that school > is winding down, I'll probably get going on that.
JK> You make some amazing quilts :) I've only made a few quilted things..
JK> one was a decorator vest for a friend that starting a business selling
JK> them.. that was fun to do and to get paid for sewing was kind of neat
JK> as well (g).
I actually have been more of a garment maker over the years. I'm
waiting on a call back now on a project.
>> mother never learned to sew - the idea of sewing to make your own
>> clothes struck me as being so neat then :) :) Much later, when I was
JK> > Our girls went on a streak where they didn't want home made clothes.
JK> > Then we moved to Germany & after a while, realised that by my
JK> sewing, > they didn't have to look like all the other kids whose
JK> parents shopped > at the PX. (G)
JK> That's great - I bet the clothes lasted a lot longer as well.. that
JK> was the thing I loved about sewing for our two ... Clothes seemed to
JK> fit better and longer, and also didn't fall apart :)
Yes, they are sturdier than store bought, especially if you serge the
seams. And, I was able to custom fit Rachel's wedding gown as I made it
for her. (G) She and Deborah cooked and cleaned up the kitchen some
nights, allowing me more sewing time.
>> married I brought the same great aunt to my sewing room to see the
>> brand new Athena I'd bought. She was pretty amazed at the technology.
JK> > I was too, the first time I saw ads for it. Only things it didn't
JK> do > was the cooking & clean up and change the baby. A couple of
JK> years after > the Athena came out, I got my mom's almost brand new
JK> Futura 2.
JK> That was a great machine :) Several of my friends had that one.
My MIL got one about the same time as my mom and still has it. When my
mom got hers, I told Steve that it was more machine than she'd ever use
(truthfully). She realised that and gave it to me.
JK> Definitely :) Will you do appliques on the sundresses? My daughter
JK> used to love those.
I'm not sure yet; the fabric is patterned. Still thinking about it.
>> drinking a lot of coffee at night. Then you can't sleep when you want
>> to later that night :)
JK> > Sounds like Steve's Provigil (Modafinil). He takes a whole one in
JK> the > morning, then can take another half around lunch time if he
JK> needs to
JK> > stay awake in the afternoon. If he takes it after 2-ish he's awake
JK> That sounds rough :( It must not be real easy for him..
He's up late most nights with school work. Quite the challenge but he's
doing well, overall.
JK> > If I just sack out after eating if it does hit
>> me, and I only sleep an hour, then I have no problems later that night
JK> > That'll work. I try not to nap too late in the afternoon (had to
JK> lie > down a couple of times recently) or have a caffienated drink
JK> after
JK> > 6-ish. Either one of those factors and it takes too long to get to
JK> > sleep.
JK> Yes know just what you mean there :)
Or, sometimes I'll just shut my eyes for 5-10 minutes.
JK> > Mine are packed 2 terms to one of his semesters.
JK> That's a lot of work ..
Yes, but I was talking last night with the director of my program--she
told me that some more will be offered as week end intensives soon.
That will allow people who work during the week & can't do the week
night classes to take a class that goes Friday afternoon/evening and all
day Saturday, with school work before and after that week end.
JK> registered > for a Tuesday night class for fall semester; if the one I
JK> want is the > same day, we'll be doing the crazy supper thing again.
JK> I can see how you'd have to do that :)
I'll do the on line registration in a few days; then I'll know if we
will have crazy Tuesdays this fall or not.
JK> > Same here. Nice thing about recording the class is that you can
JK> listen > to it several times--while fixing a meal, cleaning up after
JK> one, taking > the kids to school, etc.
JK> Yes, that's true... very handy to do so.
Especially if you're trying to memorize something--yu can play it over
and over and over again.
>> Should be a nice picnic :)
JK> > A small gathering but a good time is anticipated. You know all
JK> involved > but for Carol's husband.
JK> Yep - it was so great meeting everyone :)
Agreed there--you feel like it's a family reunion. BTW, Steve saw a
speidie sauce in Food Lion last night.

Catch you later,
