Hi Janis,

>> spelling of Giardino was actually Giardina, in Italy. The helpful
>> agents at immigration changed it for Grandpa (g).

JK> > Those agents changed a lot of names for people. I guess some of it

JK> Yes, that was always my understanding as well.

JK> > Some of it was trying to simplify a name; other times it was in an
JK> > attempt to make it sound "more American". Even a simple one like
JK> Weiss > I've also seen as Weis and Weisse. And, a varient, one of my
JK> professors > at Houghton had the last name of Weese--the way non
 JK> German speakers
JK> > usually try to pronounce Weiss.

JK> You see many types of spelling varients in last names, that's for
JK> sure. One of my uncles, and one of my cousins have enjoyed creating
JK> family trees on both sides of the family - that was very interesting
 JK> to see.

My mom's dad did a lot of theirs; we've visited the town in Germany
where the family came from. Our girls were about 8 & 6 when we went one
time, around Easter, and my cousin (aunt) had chocolate candy wrapped
with foil to look like bugs as a treat for them.

>> I just use a normal pot with a tight fitting lid.. Never had need to
>> try a rice cooker, but I see every chinese restaurant uses one. I
>> always thought it was just due to the amount of rice they cook.

JK> > It's a lot less fuss and bother to use one. Combine the rice and
JK> > liquid, shut the top, plug it in, press start (some are plug & play)
 JK> and

JK> hehe.. the saucepan is the same, with the exception of setting a timer
 JK> in my kitchen :)

I have a large coil (burner) free for the wok by using the rice cooker.

JK> > it does its thing. Some have a steamer rack or basket; my first one
JK> (a > pass along from Deborah) had the rack. Nice so you could cook
JK> > vegetables or something while the rice was cooking. I'll probably
 JK> look

JK> Steaming is a healthier way to cook vegetables, that's true.. that
 JK> could be a bonus.

Yes, that's why we do a lot of our veggies in the microwave.

JK> > for that when this cooker (bought it in HI) dies. Interestingly, we
JK> > taught a fair number of folks in HI how to cook brown rice in it. A
JK> lot > of them had considered it but not tried doing so until we told
JK> them how > we do it.

JK> With my saucepan, it's just a matter of setting it for 40 minutes
JK> rather than 25, so no bother there. If I'm making Italian rice,
JK> risotto, you really can't mimic the hand stirring to create creamy
 JK> rice.

I've yet to find a brown arbrio type rice for risotto; Steve doesn't
want me to make it with white rice.

>> I'd bet they have some canned answer, given the number of people who
>> won't eat HFCS. Waiting for a response from them (g).

 JK> > If it's Progresso, it will be a canned answer. (G)

JK> Yep no doubt (bg).. but still no answer. I'll try again in a few days
JK> .. maybe if I just keep at them, they'll get the hint :)

Keep nagging; they'll respond eventually.

JK> at > the one place where we lived in Swansboro. I had my hands full
JK> with a > baby & toddler; Steve was working 30 miles away, pastoring a
 JK> church,
JK> > going to school 30 miles the other direction and on the fire
JK> departent > so the garden didn't get the attention it needed. I was
JK> doing all our > bread making, putting up (boughten or given) produce
JK> and doing whatever > sewing I could squeeze in (mostly clothes) then.

JK> I did the same when the kids were small, but luckily could keep the
JK> kids occupied close to me in the garden area, so I could weed it, etc.
JK> I think we probably wouldn't have survived without that garden back
 JK> then :) I think the kids were about 6 and 3 1/2 at the time I'm
 JK> thinking of.

Ours were 2 and 5 months when we moved into that place; 4 1/2 and not
quite 3 when we moved out. They needed more watching than I could give
them and garden at the same time.

>> That's great :) It really is the way I love greenbeans the most. You
>> can serve them cold, or warm or tepid. I think I like tepid the best.

JK> > I think so too. I had the left overs, cold, today. The balsamic
JK> > vinegar was a bit too sharp cold.

JK> You could stir it up some when that happens, or leave it at room
JK> temperature for a bit and then toss.. might help.

Or nuke it a bit. I just wanted a quick lunch of throw togethers.

JK> > figured it wouldn't be worth the cost (about value of the van) to
JK> fix > it. Then too, at that age, it was a "what's going to go next?"
 JK> > situation.

JK> Yes, that's rough when a car gets to that point.

But, it's part of life.

JK> > winter to spring, with a bit of summer thrown in this year. Problem
JK> is, > summer will be here all too soon and last too long.

JK> Can't last long enough for my taste (vbg).. I dread the winters now
JK> but given this last winter, I don't know anywhere where it will suit
JK> me (g). Seems like everyone got cold this past winter... very strange
 JK> temperatures anyway.

We were frozen! Enjoying the not quite temps now. Not quite hot enough
for full time use of the central AC--but that's coming, all too soon.

>> > If you're firm enough with them now they should listen later. If
>> you're > teaching them basic obedience, they should have "NO CAT
