Ärende: Growing kids
====================
Hi Janis,

>> ever see that many grandchildren (G). But my daughter's 3 son's are

JK> > You have it nice--they're not too far away to pop in often, far
JK> enough > that they don't take advantage of it.

JK> I wish they were closer - If we lived in Ithaca, it would be great to
JK> have them stop by after school, etc. (G)

Break out the milk & cookies times?

>> not a big deal. I use other services like ICQ, aim, yahoo and gmail.

JK> > Same here; we've had the earthlink accounts since about 04 while we
JK> were > in HI. Or, they can get hold of me thru Steve's FB. Friends of
 JK> our
JK> > girls have befriended us; some of them were "adpoted" kids for us &
JK> our > girls were for their parents. (G)

 JK> That's neat :)

Most of them were other military families so it was like having extended
family in an area where there was no biological family nearby.

>> of the age of our parents. One of the reasons my doc insisted that I
>> go for therapy and start taking this drug is because he knows that if
>> I had such a bad fall as to break my hip, things can then sometimes
>> just get progressively worse, in many respects..

JK> > Very true. Are you using anything like Fosamax or Boniva? We did

JK> No, he hasn't had me take any additional drugs like those. I guess
JK> the tests are ok for bone density.

OK, just wondering. I presume you've had bone density tests then. Just
make sure your doctor has them done every couple of years or so.

JK> > some research tho, that long term Fosamax may be a contributer
JK> towards > DCIS. We were wondering what caused it for me & saw that as
 JK> a potential > smoking gun.

 JK> That's terrible, but no, I didn't know that :(

We didn't either; I talked with my current doctor & we decided to
discontinue use of anything like that, but have a bone density test in
November (2 years since the last one). If I'm still good, I'll stay off
the drugs; if not.....................I do try to get a good amount of
calcium & vitamin thru things like yogurt, soy milk, cheese, some ice
cream..........

JK> > Scary to think about tho. One time she sort of asked out loud if
JK> she > remembered to salt the water (They really could consume much
JK> less salt > than they do, same with sugar.) for potatoes. If I hadn't
JK> seen her do > it, they would have been double salted. Made me wonder
JK> how many times > that has happened.

JK> Understand :( When Mom comes, she helps out when she's up to it, but
JK> I'm always right there to make sure things like that don't happen.. it
JK> helps her feel somewhat useful so I don't mind her helping.

If my mom were living with us, she'd have to do a major change in the
way she eats. (G) I'd probably ask for her help in some easy kitchen
jobs but sort of keep an eye out for her safety. Nothing with a knife
sharper than a table knife because ours are quite a bit sharper than
hers.

>> This was way back, during the depression. I'm sure they weren't
>> allowed to do much more than complain about it (g).

JK> > Most likely. OTOH, even in the Deperssion, some moms went to great
JK> > lengths to fix foods they knew their kids would eat. Those were the
JK> > exceptions, generally better off in terms of finances, type people

JK> Yes, I would think so. Did you see those recipes that Lee Lofaso
JK> posted.. Vinegar pie, etc. I thought those were such neat recipes ..
JK> want to try them :)

I saw some of them--some looked like ones in my PA Dutch cook book. I
think there's a vinegar pie in that one.

JK> > Extra money, something to keep hismind challenged & out of his
 JK> wife's > hair...........(G)

JK> haha.. That may be true :) Right now they have an alpaca farm in
JK> Virginia. That must be very interesting also.

Depending on the size of it, possibly quite a lot of time needed to take
care of it. How many animals & what do they do with the wool?

JK> > Ours grew fast too. The pediatrician I took Rachel to, didn't like
JK> it, > turned out he had a kid with "formula fatties." OTOH, I took
JK> Deborah to > an older GP who was very encouraging & accepted the
JK> weight gain for what > it was.

JK> That's good, that really helps. Some of the older doctors were
 JK> irreplacable I think.

We need more like that. I've a feeling, if she sees children at all (I
don't think she does.) our doctor would be of the same mind set as the
older GPs, even tho she's young.
