Hi Hap,

-> hn> depression, and he kept a lot of the local families supplied with
-> hn> milk, butter, and eggs during those years. Some paid, most
-> hn> couldn't but he gave it anyway.

-> Part of the time--it helped him a bit financially and others got the
-> dairy stuff they couldn't afford otherwise.

hn> It actually hurt him financially, but he did it just

Well, he didn't have to take a big loss by just dumping the milk or
geting rid of the herd. May not have made him rich in dollars but...

 hn> the same...When I was a kid I could just mention his
hn> name and that I was his grandson and it was like a free
hn> pass for lots of things...but mom wouldn't let me take

........this shows that it's not always money. Those that did pay felt
good that they could pay, if even a bit. Others paid in other ways as
you found out years later. It was sort of like that with my Mom's
family. Her dad sent care packages over to relatives in Germany after
the war; when I visited them in 75 with my aunt, they did quite a bit
for us. I found out it was because of those packages; they helped the
family in Germany more than I'll ever know.

hn> full advantage of it.....(grin). My grandfather was a
hn> mason (bricklayer) and during WWII he was one of the
hn> foremen who were responsible for building the Hanford
hn> Nuclear plant here in Washington! He had an exciting life,
hn> when he was a young lad he ran away from home and
hn> worked on Buffalo Bill's show train. He died in 1958 or 9
hn> in his 90's .....from cancer I think. During WWII he ran
hn> most of the farm vehicles on moonshine! He was a
 hn> character!

Do you have all of this written down somewhere? It would make
interesting reading for generations to come--and back them up when they
run across sidebars of "is or isn't it true" research in geneology.

-> hn> I don't know about when he went to the fleet.
-> hn> We never heard the term DFac....it was ChowHall when
-> hn> you were ashore, and "The Mess Deck" when you were
->  hn> at sea!

-> It used to be Mess Hall but the newer Army came up with Dining Facility,
-> which promptly got shortenend to DFac.

hn> I still like chowhall better (grin)

It describes the use much better. (G)

-> hn> Once you get into State's Rights issues you are messing in
-> hn> Constitutional ground and LOTS of problems come up when

-> I know, but there needs to be better co-ordination between the states
-> for military kids. You probably saw that as you were growing up altho
-> your parents were probably much more aware of it than you.

hn> I went to more schools than I can count (grin) so yeah it was
hn> different when you went to a new school...but you adapt...
hn> or you didn't survive...I always adapted (grin). To a kid homework
hn> is homework no matter where you are...and spelling tests
hn> are still just another test.

I know but we had some issues with the schools when we moved to Texas
from California. The birth date cut off varies from state to state and
Rachel was affected. We pleaded our case to the local board who took it
to Austin, short story is that we won. It changed a rule in TX education
policy too. (G) Had semestering issues when we moved from MA to AZ with
both girls as well.

-> hn> LOL if I eat it and like it....it's an immediate Tradition!

-> OK, it will be under consideration. Will you be coming to this one?
-> Today Steve said that we will plan on going to the picnic, whatever date
-> is set, and plan family visits around it.

hn> Not looking likely at this point, Anne is going to
hn> New York at the end of this month, to visit her
hn> mother and relatives that she hasn't seen in ages.
hn> And she'll want to visit Amanda down in California
hn> this summer as well (I'm SURE of that) so that will
hn> be our travel budget for this year I think! I was hoping

Sigh! We don't know where we will be when the 2009 comes around. I can
understand wanting to visit the kid(s) and relatives tho. We'll visit
relatives around the picnic date and I'll be going to be with Rachel
when the new baby comes. I suspect Deborah will try to, as well, since
she was out of the country when Robert was born.

hn> to make another photo trip up to Canada (Calgary and
hn> Edmonton) but that looks like it's unlikely as well. Gas
hn> prices being what they are these days we'll probably
 hn> stay close to home.

I understand. Hook up a web cam, maybe Janis will do the same and we
can have you do a virtual visit. Of course you will only see the
goodies and there's no aroma transmission but you will be able to see us
all enjoying everything. (G)
