Hi Sean,
RH> Good progress, but watch how long those short bursts are.
SD> They've become progressively shorter. I have taken to setting up my
SD> ham radio in the back of my SUV a bit-I wear my wrist brace and take
Sounds like you will be needing some profesional torture (I mean
physical therapy) on the wrist.
SD> methodical and deliberate with my movements as not to do anything
SD> funny. June 9 is when I'll be heading back to see if I need physical
SD> therapy. I've gotten about 15 degrees more movement (measured by
SD> putting a protractor on the hand and moving it up), so that's helped
The pros have a nifty thing called a gonniometer which is basically a
protracter with extention legs for measuring ROM--Range Of Motion in
this case. Have you been doing the warm soaks?
RH> allowing Tylenol? You need what I call the "big guns" to have a bit of
RH> relief. Keep eating left handed for a while; you should be pretty good
RH> at that by now. (G)
SD> Nothing else due to my hypertension and diabetes. Motrin is
SD> contradicted due to my blood pressure (Motrin restricts my blood
SD> vessels while the lisonopril I take helps to open them up) and nearly
SD> everything else is contradicted due to my diabetes. I bleed very
OK, I see. I use a couple of NSAIDs daily to keep everything at a dull
roar but am also having blood pressure troubles--partly because of them
and some other meds I have to use every day.
SD> easily-especially nosebleeds-so I have to be very careful with any
SD> NSAID. Tylenol, though, has always been like taking a placebo for me.
SD> It's never worked on me my entire life. I have better luck with
SD> asprin than Tylenol.
Too bad they can't let you use something else,if only for a short time.
Steve was reading someething off the web last night where hot chocolate
is supposed to be good for high chlesterol. According to some folks,
foods can be used to help a lot of medical problems.
RH> several places and I know how you can hurt all over. The left wrist
RH> and elbow are telling me to lay off the keyboard; I will--in a few
RH> minutes. Good thing supper will be mostly recycled chicken and potato
RH> salad with another vegerable to go with them. Maybe I'll jsut rinse
SD> My hand's humming right now, but I've had to do some typing tonight.
SD> I think after I get off (at midnight), I'm going to run by our 24 hour
SD> Wal-Mart to get a hot water bottle. I think a good session with that
SD> would be a blessing for my hand...just getting it to relax.
That probably would help--wrap the bottle and your hand in a warm towel.
SD> Tonight, I had a Lean Cuisine meal. Ugh. Never again. Bland.
We tried some of those and various other heat & eat meals over the
years. None of them are really that good and the sodium level is
astronomical.
SD> Tomorrow, I'm going to Sam's Club and going to buy some stuff in bulk
SD> to make sandwiches with. I like turkey and cheese, with some crackers
That would work; the turkey can be frozen if you buy enough of it. Best
deal is to roast a turkey breast or two and slice from them.
SD> of some sort. I'd love to find one of those old Thermos lunchboxes
SD> like my grandpa used to have: it had a domed top with a Thermos in the
SD> top...an old metal lunchbox. I need to start bringing my lunch with
Check eBay. Meanwhile, if I ever come across one.......Steve used to
have one before he went into the Army but it's ancient history now. I
packed quite a few meals for him when he was working the civilian jobs
he had.
SD> me...and checking my glucose levels.
Smart idea.
RH> Look into it--and ask for a personal trainer if you can. We got a
RH> treadmill in HI because the sidewalks weren't safe (too many heaves
SD> I'm thinking about getting a small home gym instead...but with the
SD> space restriction of our tiny apartment, that's on hold while I
Sounds like Plan B might be better.
SD> However, there is a nice 24-hour gym on the way home from work...the
SD> thought of post-work workouts (on the nights I'm not working
SD> overnight) sounds
SD> good...it would be a good way to get all of the extra energy out and
SD> tucker me out enough to make me sleep when I get home. :)
This is a great Plan B!
RH> So work on the legs for now; the wrist will come in time. Just
RH> remember that it will never be what it was before you broke it so push
SD> I've never been able to do push-ups right. I do better with other
SD> exercises. I've been doing some light calithenics (sp!), such as steam
SD> engines (Steve knows about those, I'm sure :), situps with my hands at
SD> the sides,
SD> knee-benders, et al. I'm terribly, terribly out of shape and ashamed
SD> to admit it. Even in the Army, when I still was a little heavy, I
SD> could run two miles in just under 13 minutes...now, I'd have to drive.
Well, Steve is now power walking instead of running. Push ups are out
because he had rotator cuff surgery a few years ago and because of
cervical ribs, the shoulders still aren't quite what they were. Still,
he can do a pretty decent job on the PT test--which he needs another one
soon. He grabbed some Motrin the other day after some Iron Mikes were
included in PT time.
RH> Are you confined to the desk or can you walk around a bit? If you can
RH> walk, a short "get up and stretch" break every so often will help.
RH> Walk around the desk, reach for the sky, bend like a palm tree in a
RH> wind storm, etc. (G)
SD> Actually, no, this building is pretty good-sized. If my hand could
SD> take it, I could do some light housekeeping to make the place nicer
SD> ('s what happens when you have a bunch of guys working!), but right
SD> now, it seems anything having to do with pressure on the hand in any
SD> form is out.
So you set up a roster and let the other guys do the work. Tell them
your job right now is sidewalk superintendant. (G)
RH> I'm still on a low pork diet since Steve isn't fond of it. I read
RH> recipes like this and just sigh. (G)
SD> Aww, if I'd known, I'd not post it. I /LOOOOOOOVE/ pork. In fact,
SD> watched a "Good Eats" episode where Alton showed how to make your own
I saw part of that too; it was on Wed. night. Got home from church a
bit earlier than normal so I got to see the last 15 minutes or so. I
like pork too but it doesn't bother me over much not to eat it. I can
order it when we eat out if I want to. Post away; if I wnat, I'll grab
it, if not, someone else may find it just what they were looking for.
SD> pulled pork...so let's see...does he like chicken? This sounds
SD> awfully good, but awfully high in carbohydrates for me.
SD> MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
SD> Title: Egyptian Chickpea and Orzo Soup
SD> Categories: Soups, Beans, Noodles, Chicken, Egyptian
SD> Yield: 4 Servings
Not really too high in carbs, all things considered. We do have whole
wheat orzo in the pantry. If you want, you could use less orzo and
chick peas, just have a thinner soup.

Catch you later,
