It's fun--gets you to know new people, new customs, new foods, etc. Our
first Christmas in Germany we had a single soldier and the family that
lived across the hall join us. The family had just moved in and gotten
their household goods a day or so before; we got ours on Thanksgiving so
we were a bit more unpacked.  As we finished dinner, we looked outside
and saw it was snowing.  The guys and kids (our 2 girls, and neighbors 2
boys) all headed outside but the other wife and I cleaned up--and got to
know each other better.

We did St. Nicklous day celebrations with our girls in Germany, and
Advent calendars.  They were tickled, when in AZ, the German club at the
high school they attended, sold Advent calendars. The school had a good
number of military kids who had been to Germany so our girls were not
the only ones happy to see "old friends".

No wonder it went to soup so fast! I don't think my folks did turkey
sandwiches. They (sandwiches) used meat that could have been a supper
meal for us with potatoes and a vegetable.  I know, wierd thinking but
Dad remembered the Depression a bit too well and knew how to stretch
food.

Try it; that's how I got started. Our younger daughter had to do her own
meals in college (she lived in a house, vs a dorm) so before leaving,
she bought a rice cooker.  As it was, she didn't usually have lots of
time for cooking so she brought the rice cooker home after a few weeks
for me to use. I upgraded cookers in HI but now that's my preferred way
to do rice.

I don't use the ramen noodles--too salty for us. But, I can see where a
single packet of flavoring in a good sized amount of rice, would add
just a hint of flavor and be relatively low salt.  Grab your son's
cooker and try cooking rice in it; then let us know how it turns out.
