I was reading in one of my quilt books that the Hawaiians would use it
sometimes to "glue" sheets of tapa together for coverings.

I suspect so--a yellow cake and a cooked cornstarch type pudding could
be subbed if you didn't want to use a mix.

I don't know. It was one of the NY City transplant parents that cme up
with the idea to begin with.

When you leave the area, you lose a lot of the continuing history.  BTW,
if you saw the movie "You Can Count On Me" (came out around 2000); it
was filmed in/around Margaretville. I caught bits of it on a plane the
next spring but would like to find a copy--guess I should check Amazon.
