Yes, that's a good reason also.

Then again, they didn't have cell phones. <G>

Because I have seen people who are busy texting while walking down the sidewalk
walk head-first into a streetlamp and knock themselves out.  Texting is good
and has its place but unfortunately, it seems in the US that people have lost
their common sense and forgotten there is a time and place for everything.

Paying for texting is actually a huge ripoff, even if it's cheap, since SMS
simply runs on a normally unused sideband of the main carrier signal.  There
was a big whoop-de-doo about it here and a lot of the major carriers cut their
prices on texting plans.

Either that way or by simple attrition of the people who can't use common
sense. :)

I agree with that, Jim.  My main beef is these rather boorish teenagers who
can't do anything BUT text and jabber 24/7, especially when they're driving.

I find it comforting that my wife has a cell phone when she travels alone on
the rapid transit bus system here.  She can get hold of me wherever we may be
at independantly at the time in case there's a problem.

I'm not against cell phones.  Just some common sense and courtesy would be
nice.

On a side note, I was told that the man who invented the cell phone who worked
for Motorola made a call just outside his competitor's office at Bell Labs to
let his competitor that yes, his (Motorola's) design did work.

I'm also reminded of a line from the very short-lived "That 80's Show" on Fox.
There was a scene of one of the main characters calling from a "brick" and
exclaiming "...and it's only $8 a minute!!!"...
