Hi Ruth,

>> Yeah, mine had the free-arm as well.. don't remember the model number

> That one was built like a tank! It was mostly metal and weighed a ton!

Ah, mine was very light-weight plastic IIRC.. maybe a later edition than the
one you had. Still had some weight to it, but I could lift it by the handle
easily enough. It came with a cover that snapped on, so that was nice.

>> though :) I remember I started sewing on my grandmother's singer that

> Smart going. My mom had a 1950 model Singer I did my first sewing on.
> She messed with the tension in the time when you weren't supposed to and

A hidden treasure :) It was hard to adjust those very old singers's tension,
but you pretty much had to figure it out if it was going to sew
anything..That's why I liked the Stylist I bought so much .. it was much easier
to work with the tension, etc.

>> I can understand that. Singer used to be so great with trade-ins in
>> the old days.. They don't do that anymore that I've found.

> Sigh!

Yes, very disappointing.. It's hard somtimes to think about buying machines
from dealers online, but I've found a good company I've dealt with a few
times.. and thankfully I'm not planning on changing my machine any time soon
(g).

>> Handy :)

> Saves a lot of time when I'm pushed. It's either battery operated or an

Good idea. Though for me, I can make such a mess when I cook I wouldn't
generally think of that hehe

>> That's wonderful.. beautiful name :)

> Pretty little girl too. I'm back from my cooking/cleaning job there.
> Rachel's house is much larger than ours but doesn't have striking
> clocks. We've got a small house with 3 striking clocks but no kid noise.
> She also has a gas stove; I'd gladly trade this electic one for it. (G)

I know what you mean there.. My mom always preferred electric stoves, mostly
because gas stoves seemed to bother her allergies and asthma alot. I didn't
like them much.. I've always preferred gas.

>> Yes, just pass it through the rollers as you increase the tightness of

> Great!

I love the way it makes spaghetti.. was a good tool to find.

>> Mostly I have to catch mine before my puppies do hahaha Seriously, I
>> have it attached to the smaller center-island counter top in the back

>> catch it with my other hand.

> Ours fits onto our KA mixer--don't have enough counter space to set it
> at one end and guide fresh pasta onto a counter. Last time we made it,
> Steve rolled & cut, gave it to me & I set it on the top of the freezer
> or the table to dry.

I guess that's why I like the manual atlas machine.. I can attach it to any
counter or the kitchen table here, and just roll out and dry the macaroni .. My
daughter has the same problem as you, trying to find a decent place in her
kitchen to run the KA with pasta press.. she also doesn't have much in the way
of counter space. She's thinking of modifying her existing counters to extend
them, which will force her to lose one cupboard, so she's still thinking about
that.

>> Yes, it's just about warm enough for them now :)

> And to think about the garden? My dad is talking of several corn plants
> in the ground and probably tomatoes in containers as his only garden
> this year.

I just checked some seeds I planted in the enclosed 'kennel' area (SAFE from
Dogs!!!) and they're coming up really nicely. I planted peas, spinach and
lettuce so far. when we hit 75-80F, then I'll put in some greenbeans,
tomatoes, etc. We're planning on moving all the garden beds in there
eventually since the pups have decided to treat my poor garden beds as they're
playground Lol.. I checked my asparagus bed which is outside the "safe area" in
the old garden bed area, and not single stalk has come up.. darn dogs either
already ate them (lol) or stomped them to death :(

>> in > poultry stock--gives it a nice flavor. Just have to make sure
> I'm JK> not > planning beef fried rice with left overs. (G)

>> Ron's favorite for rice is just butter and salt. I do often use
>> chicken stock though.

> The added flavor the stock gives is so nice. Especially if it's a home
> made stock. (G)

Very true.. when I make a pilaf, say rice with onions and peas, it makes a big
difference as well.

==Rice and peas==
2 cups water or good chicken broth
1 onion minced
1/2 cup peas
1 cup rice
2 tablespoons butter or olive oil

Saute the onion over med. heat in the butter or oil. When translucent, add the
rice and stir to coat. Add the broth or water, and cover, simmering for about
15 minutes. Add the peas and cook for 5 minutes more. Give it a few shakes of
salt and pepper, and serve.

Take care,
Janis
