Hi Janis,

>> Yeah, mine had the free-arm as well.. don't remember the model number

JK> > That one was built like a tank! It was mostly metal and weighed a
 JK> ton!

JK> Ah, mine was very light-weight plastic IIRC.. maybe a later edition
JK> than the one you had. Still had some weight to it, but I could lift
JK> it by the handle easily enough. It came with a cover that snapped on,
 JK> so that was nice.

I forget the composition of the 514; it seemed light weight but I was
better able to lift at the time. The 534 manual had a 1974 copyright on
it. They both had snap on covers.

>> you to understand how the machine worked though. When I bought that
>> Stylist though, I was in heaven (g)..

JK> > Smart going. My mom had a 1950 model Singer I did my first sewing
JK> on. > She messed with the tension in the time when you weren't
JK> Futura II she gave me, > then got a more basic model she doesn't use
JK> now. (It's too far buried > under other stuff to rasonably access.)

JK> A hidden treasure :) It was hard to adjust those very old singers's
JK> tension, but you pretty much had to figure it out if it was going to
JK> sew anything..That's why I liked the Stylist I bought so much .. it

Then too, the choice in fabric types increased over the years as well.
You needed a machine that could sew silk and double knit polyester,
nylon as well as heavy denim.

JK> was much easier to work with the tension, etc.

For sure on that one!

>> I can understand that. Singer used to be so great with trade-ins in
>> the old days.. They don't do that anymore that I've found.

 JK> > Sigh!

JK> Yes, very disappointing.. It's hard somtimes to think about buying
JK> machines from dealers online, but I've found a good company I've dealt
JK> with a few times.. and thankfully I'm not planning on changing my
JK> machine any time soon (g).

Good going, finding a company you can work with. While we were in GA,
the repair/tune up person for my Pfaff was impressed I hunted down some
parts on line (co-incidentally, from a place in NC, before we knew we
were moving here) he'd not been able to find. He had been looking for a
site and was quite pleased with his order from that one.

>> I've > also got a Side Winder so I can wind with another spool of
>> > different color without unthreading the current set up.

>> Handy :)

JK> > Saves a lot of time when I'm pushed. It's either battery operated or
JK> an > AC adaptor so I could bring it into the kitchen and wind bobbins
JK> while > working on supper.

JK> Good idea. Though for me, I can make such a mess when I cook I
JK> wouldn't generally think of that hehe

I'd make sure I set it on an out of the way place. Probably the washer
or dryer, maybe the freezer. More likely the washer or dryer tho, the
freezer top is getting a lot of "holding" use right now while I'm doing
some putting up. But, after tomorrow, I'll stop until peach & tomato
season.

JK> > clocks. We've got a small house with 3 striking clocks but no kid
JK> noise. > She also has a gas stove; I'd gladly trade this electic one
 JK> for it. (G)

JK> I know what you mean there.. My mom always preferred electric stoves,
JK> mostly because gas stoves seemed to bother her allergies and asthma
JK> alot. I didn't like them much.. I've always preferred gas.

Older gas stoves put a lot of particulants in the air, especially with
the always on pilot lights. Newer ones with the electronic ignition, are
about the same as electric stoves (for asthma patients) according to an
asthma education specialist I saw in HI about 10 years ago.

JK> I love the way it makes spaghetti.. was a good tool to find.

A keeper then, for sure.

>> of the kitchen. the spaghetti just falls to the counter, so I can

JK> > Ours fits onto our KA mixer--don't have enough counter space to set
JK> it > at one end and guide fresh pasta onto a counter. Last time we
JK> made it, > Steve rolled & cut, gave it to me & I set it on the top of
JK> the freezer > or the table to dry.

JK> I guess that's why I like the manual atlas machine.. I can attach it
JK> to any counter or the kitchen table here, and just roll out and dry
JK> the macaroni .. My daughter has the same problem as you, trying to
JK> find a decent place in her kitchen to run the KA with pasta press..
JK> she also doesn't have much in the way of counter space. She's
JK> thinking of modifying her existing counters to extend them, which will
JK> force her to lose one cupboard, so she's still thinking about that.

Lots of thought going into that. Would she have sufficient storage space
if she gave up the cupboard?

JK> > And to think about the garden? My dad is talking of several corn
JK> plants > in the ground and probably tomatoes in containers as his only
 JK> garden

JK> I just checked some seeds I planted in the enclosed 'kennel' area
JK> (SAFE from Dogs!!!) and they're coming up really nicely. I planted
JK> peas, spinach and lettuce so far. when we hit 75-80F, then I'll put
JK> in some greenbeans, tomatoes, etc. We're planning on moving all the
JK> garden beds in there eventually since the pups have decided to treat
JK> my poor garden beds as they're playground Lol.. I checked my asparagus
JK> bed which is outside the "safe area" in the old garden bed area, and
JK> not single stalk has come up.. darn dogs either already ate them (lol)
JK> or stomped them to death :(

Nice to have the space for the dogs, as well as the garden. My dad
always fenced off the gardens but us kids (and the dogs) had run of the
neighbor's acreage as well as ours. The fence was supposed to deter
(HA!) rabbits and suchlike. Latest update is that Dad is now
reconsidering even the small garden, mostly because of physical
limitations.

JK> > The added flavor the stock gives is so nice. Especially if it's a
 JK> home > made stock. (G)

JK> Very true.. when I make a pilaf, say rice with onions and peas, it
JK> makes a big difference as well.

 JK> ==Rice and peas==
JK> 2 cups water or good chicken broth
 JK> 1 onion minced
 JK> 1/2 cup peas
 JK> 1 cup rice
JK> 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil

Much more so than those insipid things a lot of manufactureres sell for
broth or stock. (G)
