Hello, Ruth.

Friday June 10 2011 at 16:21, you wrote to me:

It still had a reputation for that back in the mid-90s when I was there. I had
a friend who was a MP, after retirement, got a job working for the HH police
department. He privately told me that they liked to nail soliders for speeding
because they knew they had the money. That doesn't surprise me in the least
bit, but I haven't been back there since 2000, so maybe things have changed.

RH> Some cops, seeing an out of area (state, county, whatever) license

That mentality is the same, I've noticed, pretty much anywhere. About 20 miles
south of me on I-26 (it's "east I-26" oddly), in the town of Erwin, they loves
themselves a good speed trap. They claim it's because I-26 is a "drug
corridor", but at that particular location, I-26 is six lanes, flat, and
wide-open with a reduced speed limit. Thankfully, when I have to head down
that way to go to Atlanta, I take a backroad down into Asheville (longer, but a
very scenic and curvy drive), get around Asheville which is a bizarre maze to
get through since they've not built an "outer loop" for the Interstate to go
around town instead of through it, and pop out near Hendersonville which is
where we connect to U.S. State Route 25 and head down to Greeneville, S.C., to
connect to I-85.

That rather roundabout way has saved us from the myriad of speed traps that
litter that particular route, especially in North Carolina, in Mars Hill, where
that town sits at the bottom of some very long and steep hills. North Carolina
state troopers sit at the bottom of those hills in clusters like spiders in
their webs. :)

Not that I bother speeding anymore-after having a head-on collision, the "need
to speed" disappeared. These days we're more interested in enjoying the
scenery and stopping to take pictures.

RH> Probably because they've lost their reputation of being a speed trap.

Yeah, but locally, I'm sure they're still doing what they have done for years.
It's a hard habit to break, I'm sure.

RH> We lived in CC for the first 15 months or so we were at Fort Hood.
RH> Had to rent a place off post because at the time, E4, under 2s
RH> couldn't get post housing. They changed that rule after we'd been
RH> there about 6 months but it took almost a year to get housing. (We got
RH> it on West FH where Steve worked.) Joined First Baptist Church, CC and
RH> kept out membership there after moving on post. Lived on post for
RH> about 11 months before moving to Frankfurt, West Germany.

I'd lived on-post for a very short while at Fort Sill, but I married there and
we lived off-post the entire time I was at Fort Hood. We were in a tiny
apartment complex just off of Highway 183 in 'Cove (2207 E. Hwy 183; still
remember the address!). I lived there from 1996 until 2000 when my wife and I
divorced, then I moved to Illinois.

RH> Not being too much of a hot dog eater, I've never cared for corn dogs
RH> either. Never bought any in the stores, just let the girls get them at
 RH> Golden Corral.

Maura's not one much for corn dogs either. She does love her hot dogs,
especially when combined with baked beans.

RH> You'll enjoy that Dutch oven, especially in colder weather. You can
RH> brown meat for a stew in it, add everything else and pop it in the
RH> oven on a low temperature, letting it cook all day. The meat comes out
RH> nice and tender, everything else is done nicely too. We've done lamb
RH> shanks in the Dutch oven--marinaded in Italian dressing, coated with a
RH> flour & cheese mix and braised. They're good too, and after the
RH> initial few minutes of work, they don't need any more attention except
RH> an occaisional turning until time to serve. We introduced lamb to some
RH> of our friends in Savannah by fixing it that way.

That sounds really good. To be honest, we've only used the Dutch oven a couple
of times. However, once I'm in school, I would like to start using that more
often, as well as the crockpot, to have meals ready when we get home from
school and work.

Maura has never had lamb (except in a gyro). Those lamb shanks sound pretty
good.

RH> Hmmmmmmmmmmm, wonder if Robert and Sarah would like them as much as
RH> their mom and aunt used to. (G)

Oh, I'm sure. :) I can't eat hot dogs like I used to, so corn dogs are a rare
treat. I think homemade corn dogs will be even better.

A side note: I received a phone call at 8:35 PM last night. It was a local
Long John Silver's asking if I wanted to come in for an interview today at 2:30
PM. So, I'm hoping the next time I post, I will have some good news.
