====================================================================
Hi Sean,

RH> Could have been Nolanville (as Wikipedia claims) but in the mid 80s,
 RH> HH had the reputation.

SD> It still had a reputation for that back in the mid-90s when I was
SD> there. I had a friend who was a MP, after retirement, got a job
SD> working for the HH police department. He privately told me that they
SD> liked to nail soliders for speeding because they knew they had the
SD> money. That doesn't surprise me in the least bit, but I haven't been
SD> back there since 2000, so maybe things have changed.

We've not been back since we left, and you got there after we'd been
gone a while. When we were there, we didn't have the money to pay a
speeding fine but Steve never got a ticket so it was a moot point with
us. We usually didn't go much of anywhere but CC, Killeen and Fort Hood
anyway. Couple of trips to Temple, one to Lampassas as I recall plus a
couple of trips to the church camp (in their vehicle) and a mission trip
to Eagle Pass for me. Other than those, up to NY a couple of times and
once to the airport (with a neighbor) in Austin. Didn't have the time or
money to get out of town too often.

RH> Some cops, seeing an out of area (state, county, whatever) license
RH> plates wantingto make big bucks off the stranger. Looks like they did,
 RH> too.

SD> That mentality is the same, I've noticed, pretty much anywhere. About
SD> 20 miles south of me on I-26 (it's "east I-26" oddly), in the town of
SD> Erwin, they loves themselves a good speed trap. They claim it's
 SD> because I-26 is a "drug
SD> corridor", but at that particular location, I-26 is six lanes, flat,
SD> and wide-open with a reduced speed limit. Thankfully, when I have to

OTOH, we've got rolling parking lots around the Triangle area certain
times of the day.

SD> head down that way to go to Atlanta, I take a backroad down into
SD> Asheville (longer, but a very scenic and curvy drive), get around
SD> Asheville which is a bizarre maze to get through since they've not
SD> built an "outer loop" for the Interstate to go around town instead of
SD> through it, and pop out near Hendersonville which is where we connect
SD> to U.S. State Route 25 and head down to Greeneville, S.C., to connect
 SD> to I-85.

When we left you, we went over the mountain on I-40. Scenic but glad we
weren't in back of a big truck. (G)

SD> That rather roundabout way has saved us from the myriad of speed traps
SD> that litter that particular route, especially in North Carolina, in
SD> Mars Hill, where that town sits at the bottom of some very long and
SD> steep hills. North Carolina state troopers sit at the bottom of those
SD> hills in clusters like spiders in their webs. :)

I've seen that before. (G)

 SD> Not that I bother speeding anymore-after having a head-on collision,
SD> the "need to speed" disappeared. These days we're more interested in
SD> enjoying the scenery and stopping to take pictures.

We've not had any need to speed, no head on collisions needed to make
that point either.

RH> Probably because they've lost their reputation of being a speed trap.

SD> Yeah, but locally, I'm sure they're still doing what they have done
SD> for years. It's a hard habit to break, I'm sure.

Income producer, stereotype, whatever..............

RH> We lived in CC for the first 15 months or so we were at Fort Hood.
RH> Had to rent a place off post because at the time, E4, under 2s
RH> couldn't get post housing. They changed that rule after we'd been
RH> there about 6 months but it took almost a year to get housing. (We got
RH> it on West FH where Steve worked.) Joined First Baptist Church, CC and
RH> kept out membership there after moving on post. Lived on post for
RH> about 11 months before moving to Frankfurt, West Germany.

SD> I'd lived on-post for a very short while at Fort Sill, but I married
SD> there and we lived off-post the entire time I was at Fort Hood. We
SD> were in a tiny apartment complex just off of Highway 183 in 'Cove
SD> (2207 E. Hwy 183; still remember the address!). I lived there from
SD> 1996 until 2000 when my wife and I divorced, then I moved to Illinois.

IOW, you got there about 10 years after we left. We lived up on Michelle
Drive, off the back way into post. Girls attended Hattie Halstead
school.

RH> Not being too much of a hot dog eater, I've never cared for corn dogs
RH> either. Never bought any in the stores, just let the girls get them at

SD> Maura's not one much for corn dogs either. She does love her hot
SD> dogs, especially when combined with baked beans.

I have trouble with beans so don't have them that often. When I do have
them, I'll grab a Lact-aid (or generic) for help.

RH> You'll enjoy that Dutch oven, especially in colder weather. You can
RH> brown meat for a stew in it, add everything else and pop it in the
RH> shanks in the Dutch oven--marinaded in Italian dressing, coated with a
RH> flour & cheese mix and braised. They're good too, and after the

SD> That sounds really good. To be honest, we've only used the Dutch oven
SD> a couple of times. However, once I'm in school, I would like to start
SD> using that more often, as well as the crockpot, to have meals ready
SD> when we get home from school and work.

They will both be handy then. I'll try to remember to get out the lamb
recipe and post exact directions but it'll have to wait a few weeks.

SD> Maura has never had lamb (except in a gyro). Those lamb shanks sound
 SD> pretty good.

Falling off the bone good! I like to serve them with whole wheat orzo
and some kind of vegetable.

RH> Hmmmmmmmmmmm, wonder if Robert and Sarah would like them as much as
RH> their mom and aunt used to. (G)

SD> Oh, I'm sure. :) I can't eat hot dogs like I used to, so corn dogs
SD> are a rare treat. I think homemade corn dogs will be even better.

Home made most anything is better than the commercial stuff.

SD> A side note: I received a phone call at 8:35 PM last night. It was a
SD> local Long John Silver's asking if I wanted to come in for an
SD> interview today at 2:30 PM. So, I'm hoping the next time I post, I
SD> will have some good news.

Here's hoping.

Catch you later,
