DS> starting weight even though I'm pretty certain I was over 400 that

I didn't realise you were following in my footsteps.

DS> The weight loss was slow going at first, but noticeable on my medical
 DS> charts. I found a medical-style double-beam scale at a rummage sale for
DS> five bucks which was pretty awesome because regular "bathroom scales"
DS> just don't have enough numbers on it for fatasses like me. I weighed
DS> in every month or so, looking at a 5-pound drop here, 8- or 10-pound
DS> loss there. Then, this past year, I broke through and it accelerated.
DS> I didn't think much about it until a couple of months ago at work,

DS> was at about the 85-pound mark or so.

I didn't have a home beam balance scale. But, I did have a friend's race car
shop and he had four old feed store scales that he used to set the weight
loadings on his race car. And my favourite grocery (Humphrey's Market) had a
BIG scale with a dial that went to 2000 pounds. I checked the accuracy by
weighing at the race car shop and then driving to the market and weighing
myself. After three tests and getting the same weights at both places - I
accepted that the big guy was accurate.

DS> When I started losing it, I was a size 56 waist (!!) and now my
DS> size 48 jeans are falling off of me - I should be comfortably into a
DS> 46 in another month or so. I've kept the belt I had at the very
DS> beginning - I just keep punching holes in it and using it. When it's
DS> buckled now, the end wraps around my side, almost to the back pocket.

Other than starting in 58" breeches and not owning a belt that could be me. I
had one belt and I eventually cut the end off to an acceptable length. I did
this about the same time I gave all my fat clothes to the Sally Anne.

DS> The local JC Penney warehouse outlet is closing, so Maryanne and I went
DS> in over the weekend so I can stock up on smaller sizes while I still
DS> can. I used to buy pants there from the returned goods rack because I
DS> could get Levis jeans for $15 a pair (catalog returns that they would
DS> send out to the warehouse store rather than return to stock since I
DS> guess they weren't allowed to sell them as "new") and I hated going to
DS> the "Big And Tall" store to pay outrageous prices for their ill-fitting
DS> fatman pants. Because the outlet is closing, everything there is 40%
 DS> off. So I bought a few 46s, a few 44s, and a couple of 42s to be
DS> prepared (at $7-something a pair I figured what the hell, right?)

I dunno what y'all have for Farm stores out there in Yanqui Land. But, I have
Big R, Farm & Fleet, Farm & Home and Tractor Supply to choose from. All carry
jeans (Lee, Wrangler, Long Haul, Dickeys, Levis, etc.) and bibs in sizes from
little shrimp to Omar The Tent-maker sizes at good prices. I just grabbed two
pair of Wrangler 46 X 30 stone washed at U$14.99 - which is 40% less than even
K-Mart gets for their house brand Route 66 denims. And if you're working
outside Carhartt is available at good prices.

DS> My eventual goal is to get down to a 40, which is what I was when
DS> Maryanne and I were married. I was comfortable then, carried it well,
DS> and looked pretty good at 6'0 and 200 lbs.

Here we have two guys named Dave with similar stories and goals - a thousand
miles apart. Who'da thunk it???

DS> For now, I'm just really happy to get on the scale, slide the little
DS> counterweights over, and find that my weight no longer starts with the
 DS> digit "3."

DS> Oh, and I've done it without any pills or fad diets or gimmicks. I had
DS> tried the Atkins Diet a few years ago, lost a shitload of weight and
DS> then immediately put it all back again. This time around I haven't
DS> done any of that crap, I just worked on changing my eating habits and
DS> tried to get more exercise. I still eat whatever the hell I want, just
DS> less of it, and I don't get all OCD about planning meals or counting
DS> calories. I don't plan on doing that for the rest of my life, so why
 DS> bother even starting?

Like I said this could be my story. Except tonight I did my one regular
indulgence of corned beef, boiled tatties and carrots. And I did get the gold
star as a member of the clean plate club ... which happens less and less often
these days.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Corned Beef Dinner
 Categories: Beef, Vegetables, Potatoes
      Yield: 6 servings *

      6 lb Corned beef brisket
      2 lg Sweet onions; sliced
      2 cl Garlic; minced
      6 Whole cloves (opt)
      2 Turkish bay leaves
      6 md Red potatoes; pared
      6 md Carrots; scraped

MMMMM--------------------HORSERADISH SAUCE--------------------------
      8 oz Cream cheese
      3 tb Fresh grated horseradish

  Place corned beef in pot and barely cover with hot water;
add onion, garlic, cloves and bay leaves. Cover and simmer
(do not boil) 1 hour per pound of meat or until fork
tender. Remove meat from liquid; add potatoes and carrots.
Cover, bring to boiling and cook 15 minutes. Stir. Continue
cooking 20 minutes longer or until vegetables are done.

To carve corned beef, cut at slight angle across the grain,
making thin slices. Since the grain goes in several
directions, you will need to switch course, too. Serve
  with horseradish sauce.

HORSERADISH SAUCE: Soften cream cheese and fluff with mixer.
Beat in grated, prepared horseradish. Makes 1 1/2 cups.
Chill if sauce is made ahead of time. Mound in bowl and
  garnish with snipped parsley.

  * Serves 6 with leftovers for corned beef sandwiches
