Not my first rodeo. I was doing this for a co-worker who had inherited the
(pretty nice, once cleaned up) Dutch oven from a relative. It was in sad shape

mostly on the outside - with decades of cooked on and carbonised erose crust.
The ammonia turned it to a brown sludge which rinsed away under a garden hose.
I first took it from the bag and rinsed it at three days. And then, back in the
bag to finish for another three days. To tell the truth, one day might have
been enough additional time. But, I was under no time pressure and I wanted to
get it done complete on the second go.

I think friend Michael is off base in that statement. Unless he is frying
something of extremely high acidity. In which case it would be best to use
something like Corning Ware, Clear Vision or LeCreuset. 
 
Putting the greased pot into the oven lets you start the seasoning without
worrying about frying something and having it stick - forcing you to re-start
the process.  Bv)=

That step is to start from bare gray cast iron. Especially if the pot is new.
It removes foreign matter and things you might not want enshrined in your
cooking vessels. Note that further down it recommends the proper cleaning
method for care of seasoned cast iron.

      Title: Cast Iron Skillet Steamers 
 Categories: Shellfish, Chilies, Citrus, Herbs
      Yield: 4 servings
 
     36    Steamer clams; scrubbed,
           - de-bearded
      1 c  Coconut milk
    1/2 c  Clam juice
    1/4 c  Fresh lime juice
      1 ts Minced fresh ginger
    1/4 c  Chopped cilantro
      2 ts Red pepper flakes
 
  Place a cast iron skillet on the stove and allow it to heat
  up to almost smoking.
 
  In a large mixing bowl combine all ingredients except
  steamers and mix well. Season to taste with salt and fresh
  ground pepper. Pour this mixture into the heated cast iron
  skillet and let it reduce by half. Add steamers and cook
  until all steamers are open, approximately 2 to 3 minutes.
  Discard any steamers that do not open. Serve immediately.
