ML> The bun, as it is called, serves mostly as a bland edible
ML> napkin; I've found that the worst-quality flabby white
ML> flour bolster is the best thing to put a burger into, as

GJ> The disintegration of that soft, sweet, white blotter does not make
GJ> for dignified eating, particularly for bearded gentlemen. (And I was

DD> Since when has eating been about dignity? Even at a rubber chicken
DD> circuit banquet eating is about stuffing your craw with sufficient
DD> calories to sustain whatever activity (however nefarious) in which you
DD> are engaged at the moment.

In some circles, dignified dining is de rigueur. You are expected to
hold your teacup just so, and use just your fingertips to hold your
cucumber sandwich.

However, I will not mention hamburgers in the same paragraph, even
though some people attempt to eat them with a knife and fork, nor can
the Australian football meat pie in a brown paper bag be included.

GJ> brought up knowing that a bun is a small, sweet cake, usually with
GJ> fruit in it, while a small, individual serve bread loaf is a roll. As

DD> See the tagline - which in this case in NOT random. Oh, and the recipe
DD> - which has been endorsed negatively by MLoo.

Noted. Sometimes I wonder if USAn English has developed as it has,
deliberately to differentiate it from the "Queen's English", or should
I blame Webster, who acknowledges the origin of your "bun" by defining
it as "a kind of bread roll, light in texture and slightly sweetened"?

GJ> The latest bombshell dropped here, yesterday, was that the Qantas OIC,
GJ> Joyce, in a fit of pique over rolling strikes by his work force, has

GJ> Now that Fair Work Australia has told everyone to go back to work
GJ> while still discussing claims, the airline is now struggling to get
GJ> its stranded passengers moving again, and not doing that very well.
 DD> Stretch and YAWN again.

Yawned like a true non-flyer.

GJ> BTW, I missed the koala reference. Perhaps that is something to do
GJ> with an advert exclusively directed at overseas audiences.

DD> I missed it to - but, then, I barely care about either Qantas or
DD> koalas - except as models for children's stuffed toys.

I didn't know you had a thing about children's stuffed toys!

Huh?

 DD> 1/2 c Light rum

The rest of the recipe can be omitted.

DD> Soak the raisins in the rum over a low flame. Set aside.

That would be rather dangerous. Better to consume them un-heated.

Of course that is only England, not Ireland, Scotland and Wales, which
have had an input to Australian English.

      Title: BFT Cucumber Sandwiches
 Categories: British, Appetizers
      Yield: 4 servings

      1 Seedless cucumber
    125 g Unsalted butter, softened (4
    1/2 Oz)
      1 ts Grated orange zest
8 Thin slices Firm white bread
           Crusts removed
      8 Thin slices Firm wholemeal
           Bread, crusts removed
           Fresh mint sprigs and thin
           Orange slices

  Makes 32 sandwiches

One of England's most traditional tea sandwiches, thinly sliced
cucumber on good buttered bread. The crusts are always removed.

Peel the cucumber, cut in half lengthways, and slice crossways as
thinly as possible. In a small bowl, combine the butter and orange
zest and stir until creamy and blended.

Spread each slice of white bread with about 1 1/2 teaspoons of the
butter mixture. Arrange several slices of cucumber on each slice and
top with the whole-wheat bread. Cut each sandwich into 4 triangles.

To serve, arrange the sandwiches on a platter, alternating white and
brown sides of the sandwiches and garnish with mint sprigs and orange
slices. From: The Great British Kitchen Cookbook of the British Food
