Recently a guest, Connie and I were at a restaurant eating fried chicken. In
the booth next to us were Asian tourists. How did I know they were tourist?
Simple, they held their knives like a pen/pencil while cutting the drumstick
being held to the plate by their fork. The last time we, Connie and I, at a
meat pie we didn't have a paper bag, next time I'll insist on authenticity.

Rumors, to that effect, are attributed to the disagreement of 1776.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Lafayette Gingerbread
 Categories: Breads, Alcohol, Beverages, Fruits
      Yield: 1 servings

           No Ingredients Found

The Marquis de Lafayette returned to America after the Revolutionary
War in the fall of 1784. After Lafayette's stay at Mount Vernon with
his beloved friend George Washington, one of Major Andrew Lewis's boys
accompanied him to Fredericksburg to pay his respects to the general's
mother. They found her in her garden in a short gown, petticoat, and
cap, raking leaves. Unaffectedly, she greeted Lafayette, and together
they went into the house. She made him a mint julep that she served
with spiced gingerbread. Listening with pleased attention to the
Frenchman's praises of her son, she replied only the "George was
always a good boy." Here's the recipe for the cake Washington's
  mother served on that visit.....
  1/2 cup butter
  2/3 cup excellent brown sugar
  1/2 cup warm milk
  2 tsp powdered ginger
  1/4 heaping tsp cinnamon
  1/4 heaping tsp mace
  1/4 heaping tsp nutmeg
  1 cup molasses
  4 tbsp brandy or coffee
  3 eggs
  3 cups flour
  1 tsp cream of tartar
juice and grated rind of 1 large orange
1 tsp baking soda dissolved in a little warm water
1 cup seeded raisins, or zante currants, soaked overnight in brandy or
  water, and drained.

Cream the butter and brown sugar with a paddle. Add the warm milk.
Mix all the spices together and add to the butter and sugar mixture.
MIx in all other ingredients. Pour into a prepared 9x13 inch pan.
Bake at 350F for 30-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the
  center comes out clean.
