=============================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Certainly a strange, largely underground airport. When walking from
GJ> one side to the other I have been passed by staff riding bicycles.
ML> And disorienting. I have been known to cross three times
ML> between the German public zone and the international
ML> secured zone without knowing it, embarrassing the passport
ML> control the first time, angering him the second, and
ML> flummoxing him the third. I'm fairly confident that an

That is where my little spherical compass pinned to my shirtfront is
so useful for not getting lost. I am sure airways staff deliberatedly
arrange for arrival and departure gates for connecting flights to be
as far apart as possible, so that transit passengers get sufficient
exercise to prevent blood clot formation. When we were there in '08,
our boarding passes said one gate, but when we got there, we found it
had been changed to another, distant gate. So we had to run.

ML> Islamic or Irish Republican terrorist would not have such
ML> an easy time of it ... or I at least hope that. It was
ML> also recently possible to do so at De Gaulle, but I've
 ML> not actually done that.

We got trapped at De Gaulle last year, after midnight, and tried to
escape by going the wrong way through some supposedly locked doors,
which sent a guard on the other side into a torrent of Gallic abuse.
Probably fortunately, I didn't understand any of it, but we had to go
back to where we had come from, up a non-working escalator.

ML> most typical anxiety dream -, only I always misattribute the
ML> identity of my dream-airport as De Gaulle, another horrible
GJ> In my experience, even worse than LAX.

ML> I've only done immigration at LAX a couple times and find it
ML> quick, efficient, and demeaning. The rest of the airport is
ML> a hive of lunacy, but relatively harmless.

But you are a USAn citizen. Try it as a despised foreigner, being
fingerprinted and having mug shots taken. Or, as happened on one
occasion, a man had inadvertently gone the wrong way through the wrong
door, so the whole domestic airport was evacuated, and all travellers
were kicked out onto the street for hours while the airport was
searched for possible explosives. All a false alarm, of course.

GJ> It is always very difficult to amuse the Polizei. A beautiful girl
GJ> companion helps when dealing with the Carabinieri, however.
ML> Lilli could I suppose be so described, though she's above both
ML> my price and age range, to say nothing of the crimestoppers'.

That could help if she is motherly enough. I found that my (then)
young, Filipina niece was very effective with the Carabinieri.

GJ> Now that you bravely tackled the Rioja wine with your raw hamburger,
GJ> did your appetite for wine return, or has it gone forever?
 ML> No and no.

Hopefully it will return soon. Kevin is deeply worried for you.

 ML> ==

GJ> The disintegration of that soft, sweet, white blotter does not make
GJ> for dignified eating, particularly for bearded gentlemen.

ML> Looking round. Gentlemen, he mutters in a querying tone.

OK, OK, OKaaay! I get your message...

GJ> BTW, I missed the koala reference. Perhaps that is something to do
GJ> with an advert exclusively directed at overseas audiences.

ML> Back in the 1960s there was an ad narrated by a grumpy
ML> voice - it described how this wonderful comfortable service
ML> drove thousands of tourists to Australia, where they
ML> proceeded to take in all the wonders of that continent,
ML> incidentally disturbing the local fauna and flora. At the
ML> end of the commercial, the voice is revealed to be that of
ML> a koala sitting in his gum tree, who finishes off the
ML> minute by moaning "I hate Qantas." There were many
ML> incarnations and variants of this commercial, all with the
ML> same ending, some of which have been nominated (by whom?)
ML> as among the best and most successful commercials of all time.

In those days I had not yet experienced television of any kind where I
was living, in Australia or PNG, let alone USA, so I missed that ad.

 GJ> Title: Rock Buns
ML> Are you saying that someone's being a bit of a hardass
 ML> in the airline dispute?

Could be. Certainly some of them got quite cross.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: HOT CROSS BUNS
Categories: Sml cakes, Breads, British, Euro-n
      Yield: 1 servings

      2 lb Flour- plain
    1/2 ts Salt
      2 oz Lard;
      2 oz ; butter
      2 oz Currants
      1 ts MIXED CAKE SPICE
  1 1/2 oz Yeast
      1 ts Sugar
    1/2 pt Milk
    1/4 pt Water; hot
      1 Eggs
           ; TOPPING
           Candied peel; OR
           Pastry strips
           WATER GLAZE

Warm an earthenware bowl, warm flour, reserve a little for mixing.
Sieve flour and salt into the bowl, rub in the lard or butter, add
currants and mixed spice and make a well in the middle. Cream the
yeast with a teaspoon sugar, mix the milk and water. Add half the
milk and water to the creamed yeast and sugar and leave for 15
minutes, or until bubbles appear on top. Mix to a dough with beaten
egg and remaining liquid, adding a sprinkling of flour when
necessary, and kneading till dough is smooth and leaves sides of bowl
clean. Form into a round, turn dough over, make one or two slashes on
top, cover with a warm cloth and leave to rise until double original
size, about 1 hour. Divide into 8-10 pieces, shape into round cakes
about 1" thick, place on greased baking sheet well apart and leave to
rise for a further 15 minutes.

On each bun, mark a cross with the back of a knife, strip of pastry or
strips of candied peel. Glaze the buns with a little sugar and water
glaze, as soon as they are removed from the oven.

Bake in a hot oven (425^F) for 25-30 minutes, but do not let them get
  too brown.

Leave to cool, tilted against wall or shelf.
