Ärende: Blood
=============
Hi Dale,

RH> the standard color worked for me. Still, now I'm double disqualified
RH> from giving blood-- the tatoos and having lived in Germany during the
RH> mid to late 80s/early 90s when they had the mad cow disease scare. ARC
RH> makes some odd rules and then wonders why they don't get doners--how
RH> can people donate with all the exemptions?

DS> I think that I had heard about the Germany being a bar to blood
DS> donation. Apparantly, that is no longer true since our Bryan has
DS> given blood and was stationed there for a while (as well as other
 DS> places
 DS> overseas).

The mad cow scare died down long before Bryan went to Germany. Only
those of us that lived there in the mid to late 80s to mid 90s or so are
deferred from donating as mad cow supposedly can lie latent for 20-30
years. Wonder if they'll let us resume donating in a few years; we came
back in mid 92. We've been back almost 20 years without any signs of
trouble.

DS> In our case, we don't give blood because it would be very difficult to
DS> get it out of us. We gave once 40+ years ago after Gail's father died
DS> in the hospital. They told us to never come back. Even when they
DS> take blood for lab work, they cannot get it in the usual place of the
DS> elbow. Has to be back of hand or perhaps forearm. Elbow veins are too
 DS> small,
DS> roll or whatever and they just give up after a few probes.

Sounds like it's no fun trying to do a basic blood test. I can pop a
vein up really easily most of the time so it's usually no problem for
test times. I've got one of the lesser common blood types that the ARC
usually asks for so I did donate in college but have only once since.

 DS> Title: Dagwood Bumstead Sandwich

RH> I'm thinking "better his stomach than mine". For the past few months,

 DS> Just as I figured:-}}

just trying to imagine having room for more than a small bite is mind
blowing.

RH> a new place in town (Main Street Grille) has had a banner over their
RH> door advertising prime rib dinners for $9.95 on Friday nights. We
RH> decided to try them out this past Friday. It was everything they
RH> advertised and better--a large piece meat (took up a good 3/4 o the

DS> Good for them and for you. I've been to some places advertising AYCE
DS> prime rib, and it was not worth the money. I'm glad that we found

This was not AYCE but well worth the money. Last night we stopped by a
place called Tropical Pickin' Chicken (Carribean style) after a day of a
lot of cooking (me), library research (Steve) and shopping (both of us).
Got the quarter chicken with 2 sides; they were out of yellow rice with
peas (my first side choice) so I got a side salad and plantains. Steve
got black beans & rice for his first side choice, 2nd was yucca with
garlic & onion sauce. I've still got a bit of my chicken left, even
after having some for lunch today. BTW, total was less than we'd pay at
some fast food places for a meal.

DS> that Irish pub with a Tuesday night special. Their prime rib is
 DS> pretty good.

Didn't we go there with you about a year ago on our way back from NY? It
was a Tuesday night so I'm thinking that was the place.

DS> There is a diner chain in the area called the Double-T Diner. There
DS> are perhaps 8-10 of them spread out over Maryland now. We go there on
DS> occasion. Like many diners, they have a very extensive menu. One
DS> time (and one time only), I ordered a porterhouse steak there. As is
 DS> my
DS> custom, I said medium rare. What came out was a thin (less than 1/2
DS> inch) hunk of meat that had no pink at all. Looked and tasted like it
DS> had been slapped onto a flat hamburger grill and forgotten for 10
 DS> minutes or so.

DS> They have other dishes that are pretty good -- but steak is not one of
 DS> them.

Remember next time you go--diners don't do steaks. We had breakfast at
one a couple of years ago when we stopped in NJ to help my aunt with a
computer. I had something new to me--pork roll. It wasn't quite ham, not
quite scrapple but it was pretty good. Steve was just getting back into
eating pork so he tried a taste of it. I don't think he ordered any pork
as part of his meal tho.

DS> Title: Western style eggs in pitas
DS> Categories: Sandwich, Breakfast, Egg, Potato
 DS> Yield: 4 servings

 DS> 2 Med. pita pockets
 DS> 1 Lge potato, wash & dice
 DS> 1/2 C red pepper, diced
 DS> 1/4 C red onion, chopped
 DS> 3 Med eggs
 DS> 3 Tbsp skim milk

I'd top them with a bit of cheese and salsa too. Guess I've lived in toe
Southwest too long. (G)
