People were going their separate ways - Will and Linda to
Boston, where they were going to check out Northeastern as a
college choice and Charlie back to school in Tallahassee. We
had brunch before breaking up, adding John (Connie couldn't
make it) and daughter-in-law Debbie to the mix.

Linda is into all natural, organic, blah, blah, so she had
insisted on Natalie's Orchid Island gourmet pasteurized orange
juice. I was a bit taken aback to note that the sticker on the
half gallon read $5.99, quite a bit for juice, but on tasting
was somewhat convinced: it tasted almost as good as fresh
squeezed - a very slight cooked undertone, but mostly like
good, ripe Valencias. A quick Internet search reveals that it
is rated #1 by a wide margin by MSNBC, Good Housekeeping, Real
Simple, and Bon Appetit. A somewhat more careful search reveals
that Trader Joe's is made by Natalie's, so save your buckaroos.

We also had Oscar Mayer center cut bacon, also $5.99 (for
12 oz). Linda did them in the oven, but as somehow we were
behind schedule, they came out shall we say medium rare.
I like limp bacon and thought them fine, not too salty, the
flavor pleasantly hammy and smoky, though I wouldn't vouch
for the identity of the smoke, which smelled like it had
maple and tobacco in the blend.

Linda and Rosemary collaborated on scrambled eggs, which
between them got forgotten enough to make a substantial crusty
layer at the bottom of the pan. As I avoid scrambled eggs
unless they have been stirred slowly and constantly until
they're uniform and meltingly tender, I partook of a scanty
partial egg just out of politeness' sake. The bacon helped.

I'd used leftover mash to make macaires, but I didn't allow
enough time and sort of hurried them up, so they were of
uneven brownness and tended to fall apart. Charlie derided
them at table but seeing me take several decided to try one.
Hah - he ended up eating more than his share of them, not a
big surprise.

There was buttered toast for those who needed more starch.

The usual Starbuck's half-caf blend, which as usual I avoided.

After the dispersal of the masses, I did the rather substantial
cleanup for this meal; took me longer than I liked, but I had
all day, during which I read a bunch, drank a bunch, and slept
an hour or so (this threw off my routine, so I didn't get to
bed again until 3 something AM, getting up at 6). Just before
dark Rosemary, who had done chauffeur duty, returned exhausted.
After dropping Will and Linda at the train station, she took
Charlie to the art museum and then lunch (he's still a growing
boy), at which she had also eaten, so she wasn't up for dinner.
We shared a half bottle of wine, that 39 Cabernet again, and
she toddled upstairs while I made myself supper: leftover turkey,
gravy, and stuffing followed by Turkey Hill vanilla ice cream -
not bad, an almost natural vanilla flavor, not so nice as the
flavor of Breyer's vanilla bean (now less nice itself, and sold
under another name), but ever so much richer. And then I went
off by myself and totally wasted the next 9 hours doing nothing.
pulling myself under the covers for a few minutes and then
getting up and futzing on the computer, rinse, and repeat
about 23 zillion times. Serve me right for taking a nap.
