NB>> Deals never last... ;) I find that the strangest things will joggle
NB>> loose memories, but often there's at least some esoteric connection
 NB>> between them...
ML> When that sort of thing happens, sometimes I can trace back a
ML> thread, sometimes it remains a total mystery.

Likewise here..

ML>> Yay, I get to go there today.
 NB>> What fun.
ML> I survived, and there wasn't anything too awful to deal with
ML> other than substantial filth, including more than usual in the
ML> kitchen. Jonathan explained it away by my being a day earlier
ML> than I said, which I had to check my e-mail to verify that
ML> this was total fiction. It was bad enough that I didn't eat
ML> a proper meal in the several days I was there, subsisting on

Apparently his brain did a convenient jiggle, deciding that what you
must have meant was at least a day later than you said... and then
remembering that as gospel... never mind the facts... From the sound
of things, it would have taken him more than a day to make a significant
dent in the mess anyway... perhaps a less lethal way to channel his
aggressions...?

ML> over-the-hill dried fruit, a chocolate stash, two pouches of
ML> microwave popcorn, and a can of soup - the kitchen would have
ML> needed substantial hours of cleaning to be useful, and it was
ML> too cold for me to go out, and I was too bummed anyhow.

Quite understandable...

ML>> infuriating things is that his are magnifications of tendencies
ML>> that ran in the family, so they're really very recognizable.
 NB>> That's very common. And a constant tight-rope for the "well-adjusted"
 NB>> to walk...

ML> Well, don't anyone imagine that I wasn't scarred by the same
ML> issues that shaped his personality and behaviors or that seeing
ML> the problems laid out in front of me doesn't affect my own outlook.

Yup. (Hence the quotes above...)

NB>> Even if technically done in the home, it's still basically "outside"

ML> It's that same workaholism that one sees elsewhere, probably
ML> fueled by some of the same issues: need to bolster self-esteem,
ML> to keep one's mind off grief and/or other problems, and so on.

Quite likely. Also possible to rise above the depression for others
where a need is seen... even if it takes even more away...

ML>> In my career, this took the form of my being either concertmaster
ML>> or a lazy back bencher (sometimes even back in the viola section),
NB>> Now that you are "retired", it probably is harder to get those
 NB>> backbench gigs...

ML> Pretty much: my reputation exceeds the amount of money
ML> I made at doing what I did, and now there's the double
ML> whammy of "he's not around any more" and "he certainly
ML> wouldn't work for what we're paying." Of course, both
ML> of these are partially at least based on fact.

Perception does make a difference for people, doesn't it.. :) Of
course, propinquity does make the casual offer more likely.. :)
