======================
Hi Hap,

 HN> Happy New Year Ruth!

It will start out well. If you saw my note to Dale yesterday about my
FIL, good news. He's out of the hospital with a diagnosis of
diverticulosis and a flare up of colitis. He's on a bland and soft diet
for a bit, will have to modify some eating choices for longer but all in
all, glad to be home.

-> retirement community; I think the favorite thing to do with this group
-> is eating. My MIL had a house full last night and enough food to feed an
-> army; tonight we were at one of their friends with more people and more
-> food. We've had enough calories over the last 3 days to last a week or

HN> Eating or cooking...a lot of retired Moms can't get
HN> past cooking for a family and changing to "cooking for
HN> two". My wife has some Aunt's who live in Florida and
HN> she loves to cook even though she's all alone now.
HN> So she goes to every potluck in her retirement
HN> community...her golf cart has more miles on it
 HN> than her car does!

Suspect that might be true for my in laws as well, regarding car/golf
cart milage. But, the car has made some trips to NY & back whereas the
cart only goes on the road in the park. They don't attend all the
community activities but have a group of friends that they like to get
together with, usually involving food as part of it. My MIL likes to
cook and bake but shouldn't eat all she makes as she's diabetic. Just
means more to give to others. And we're part of the "others" group now.
(G)

-> HN> pretty practical and is already
-> HN> focusing on the new job in Sacramento.

-> She's no longer in the academic world--first time in what, about 25
-> years? Reality will fully sink in shortly.

HN> First time ever really. Just got
HN> off the phone with her, she's about
HN> to make another run from Bodega Bay
HN> to Sacramento with more "stuff".
HN> This time she's going to also stop
HN> and pick up some Toilet paper and
HN> paper towels (grin)...live and learn!!

All the little things that make a house (or apartment) home. It seems
everywhere we move to, we add little touches here & there to make the
place more "ours". Eventually we may have a place we can permanently
call "ours", even tho the bank or credit union will own the larger chunk
of it.

-> HN> to the new apartment (pretty nice and
-> HN> in an older established neighborhood).

-> Nice! A converted older house? We're looking at the fact that Steve will
-> finish his schooling in just about a year. Finding a job, moving and
-> getting re-established will be coming up over the next few months.

HN> Nope it's a single row of "townhouses" that
HN> runs perpendicular to the street..so she
HN> has a long walkway to get to her door.
HN> but it's nicely landscaped and rather
 HN> quaint...

Sounds like she found a nice place tho she'll need a good umbrella on
wet days.

-> HN> Her boyfriend is going to stay in Bodega
-> HN> Bay for a month or so to get enough money
-> HN> to make the move to Sacramento as well.

-> Smart move. Is he in the academic world as well or a local who wouldn't
-> mind moving to Sacramento?

HN> He's about as far from academic as you
HN> can get. Smart kid..but could not
HN> handle the "school atmosphere". Not
HN> sure what the real deal is...but he
HN> works at a UPS store as a counter
 HN> person.

Could be worse. A young friend of ours (was in school with our girls)
started out bottom rung at Enterprise and has moved up the ladder quite
well. He had a bit of a rocky launch out of high school but turned
around nicely a few years later. We saw him in June, had a good visit.

-> HN> as you can get I suppose. Me? I'm enjoying being
-> HN> retired...the ballpark job is more fun than work!

-> I'm starting the transition now--only 2 more courses and I'll be done.
-> But, it will be interesting transitioning out of the academic world, but
-> easier than the transition into it was. Since I've been so part time
-> anyway, I shouldn't have much problem. Having the extra free time that
-> has been taken up with study will be a nice change.

HN> You spent most of your life not "in"
HN> the academic world, so you'll be
 HN> returning to "normal life"...except

Transitioning yet further from the military life. We still miss it,
acutely at times, but it's not hard to say good bye to early morning PT
& formation. In some ways, it was more predictable than the academic
world that changes every semester.

HN> the kids are all gone now. And being a
HN> preacher's wife will more than fill your
HN> time! I remember my Grandmother was even
 HN> busier than my grandfather!

Don't know for sure if Steve wll be pastoring a church or what, exactly
yet. That's what he wants but other areas of ministry could open up for
service. But, yes, I know I'll be busy no matter where we go, what we
do.

-> And the kids are probably anxious to have their "real" teacher. Both of

HN> Anne is just happy to be at a
HN> point where she can get back into
HN> the classroom...she misses it an
 HN> awful lot!

Only a few more days now! Got the celebratory lunch pack planned?

-> HN> They'd be hard pressed to do worse!

-> Sounds like the Mets; they blew enough games by Little Leaguer mistakes
-> to end up having a(nother) bad year.

HN> There are rumors that the team is
HN> positioning itself to be "forsale"
HN> in the next 3-5 years...so we could
HN> see some rough seasons if they're
HN> looking at reducing payroll to make
HN> sale more palatable to the new buyer.
 HN> I hope that's not true...but it's
HN> baseball so you never know until the
 HN> deal is done!

Stay tuned for the next chapter............................(G)
