Ok...cancel the smell...you still have a sense
of sanitation, and foreboding!

-> And take the bus, which runs at best every half hour at
-> dinnertime. He's tumbled to the fact that I'm kind of
-> isolated, and if I punish him, I punish me as well. Oh,
-> well, I could stand to lose a couple pounds here and there.

The cost of his dinner could contribute to 
a taxi ride either home later or away immediately!
Enabling helps him and screws you!

You might consider re establishing a
domicile in a more advantageous locale,
even a studio apartment in a region that
has lower cost of living standards. Perhaps
somewhere near Dirty Dave (seems his costs
are relatively low) or near one of UA's
hub cities. (except Texas). Then you'd
only have to visit the DC area when
absolutely necessary. The savings in 
sanity alone might offset the $$ spent!
I'd tell you to find a place out here but
most consider the west coast as too 
"isolated" from anywhere and it takes
a full day of travel to get "east".
Perhaps the St Louis or Memphis areas?
OR oddly enough Las Vegas has some
really good real estate values these
days I hear! and the Phoenix area with
all the "Sun Cities" have low costs
as well.
