Ärende: LIGHT THOUGHTS 201 20213
================================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> - the United States, most lighters are allowed, with exceptions.
GJ> What are the exceptions, and what is allowed? (I usually carry a
GJ> lighter in case I want to set fire to something.)
ML> Apparently all lighters are allowed except these.

TSA> Torch lighters create a thin, needle-like flame
TSA> that is hotter (reaching 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit)
TSA> and more intense than those from common lighters.

I wonder what that would be used for? Lighting a hookah?

 ML> In further news:
TSA> Lifting the lighter ban is consistent with TSA's
TSA> risk-based approach to aviation security. First
TSA> and foremost, lighters no longer pose a significant
 TSA> threat.

 ML> !

Haha! Tell that to Narita security.

TSA> Freeing security officers up from fishing for 22,000
TSA> lighters every day (the current number surrendered
TSA> daily across the country) enables them to focus more
TSA> on finding explosives, using behavior recognition,
TSA> conducting random screening procedures and other
TSA> measures that increase complexity in the system,

ML> I suppose they use behavior recognition to choose the
ML> subjects to conduct random screening on.

You and I have both been subjected to that in USA. I wonder what
subject models we fit?

 TSA> deterring terrorists.
 ML> ... and tourists ...

Interestingly, I read yesterday that your president was calling for
easier access for tourists to USA from "selected countries", in order
to boost tourism. As Australians are now seen to be "rich foreigners",
with the Aus$ = US$1.07, they may be spared the present necessity to
apply for visas well in advance of travel.

TSA> The U.S. is the only country in the world to ban
TSA> lighters - all other nations, including Israel
TSA> and the U.K., do not.
ML> Interesting, that's not what my research indicated.

Someone is giving mis-information. Who and why?

GJ> It so happened that a 1982 documentary movie, "Cane toads, an
GJ> unnatural history" was shown last week on the ABC. It was interesting
GJ> as to the off-hand way in which the deadly poison was viewed. It
GJ> showed small children with their pet cane toads, which loved to have
GJ> their tummy tickled, and never poisoned their owners.

ML> Deadliness, as with many other things, being relative.

Even then it was known that a horse, inadvertently chomping on a toad
had been killed by the poison, but apparently when treated with loving
kindness, they would not exude poison. In fact, many years ago, long
before they became universally hated and feared, I had a pet cane toad.
Although quite intelligent, as toads go, it was not as entertaining as
the small tree frogs I kept in a vivarium on the dining table.

GJ> One interesting aspect of the toads that I didn't know was that a lot
GJ> of dogs have come addicted to them.
ML> I'd heard of human toad-licking. I suppose dogs are susceptible
ML> to the same impulses. Peculiar that the dogs figured out to
ML> get their jollies without damaging the drug supply.

And that dogs independently discovered that property of the toads.
I read somewhere that the poison that can be squirted out of the
shoulder-glands is different from, and more potent than that secreted
by glands along the back.
