Ärende: almost baseball time
============================
Hey Ruth!

-> -> HN> was interested in "daily news" unless
-> -> HN> it was mandated for school "current events".
->
-> -> Or sports scores if you missed them otherwise. (G)
->
-> hn> Even sports I did not look in the paper for
-> hn> information. I was out playing sports rather
-> hn> than reading about them in those days.
-> hn> Other than following the baseball box scores.
->
-> That's how I get most of my sports news/scores--thru the paper. TV local
-> sportscasters are only interested in the local teams & we've an
-> excessive amount of them here. It's hard to get any kind of national or
-> international story of over 15 seconds (not worth their breath) unless
-> it involves a local team or hometown athlete (eg Josh Hamilton).
->
We do not subscribe to the local
paper any more either...over the
years it has become more and more a
poorly executed badly written and
seldom proof read rag. I get news
from TV, Radio, and the internet
mostly. For Sports...read baseball,
I go to a couple of blogs I like
and the team's website as well.
->
-> -> HN> I did however usually have my face buried in
-> ->  HN> a book.
->
-> -> I did too, as a kid. I've done a lot of reading for fun as an adult
but
-> -> not in the past 3 years tho. Textbooks have taken priority but I'll
get
-> -> back to real reading in a relatively short time. I usually keep a
cook
-> -> book handy for "fun" reading, especially if I'm eating alone or have
-> -> acquuired a new one. The latter usually go on my stack of books, etc
-> -> near my corner of the love seat; got one on tagines there now.
->
->  hn> Currently I have two that I am
-> hn> reading when the mood strikes.
-> hn> I'm re reading Tinker Tailor, Soldier
-> hn> Spy again, and a book on color theory
->
-> I've not read TTSS--any good? I downloaded the last Jean Auel book,
-> might do a couple of Ken Follette ones. Browsing thru Target, found out
-> that Nicholas Sparks set a story in Swansboro so might pick that one up.
-> Current book is the 18th edition of Emily Post
->
VERY good! But I like John Le Carre's books
quiet a bit as well as Helen Macinnes and
a few others...I like spy novels.

->  hn> in watercolors.
->
-> Color theory sounds interesting. I've read a bit on it as relates to
-> quilts. Most of the time I go with what looks good together--and it
-> works out as I have some knowledge of color theory. I've got the fabrics
-> for a monochromatic Rail Fence quilt to cut out--5 shades of blue
-> ranging from light to dark and, I don't think a solid in them.
->
Color theory can be fairly simple and
straight forward...or very (VERY) complex.
I'm often over my head in it and am
working to understand it better.

-> ->  HN> at someone's apartment and we'd all
-> -> HN> sit around the radio and "chart"
-> -> HN> the hits. We all had composition
-> -> HN> books that we kept track in and
->
-> -> Any chance one or more of the books is still around? It would be fun
to
-> -> look at now to see what was big then.
->
->  hn> Not any of mine..remember we
-> hn> were a military family and when
-> hn> I left home to join the navy and
-> hn> the next duty station came for
-> hn> my folks...most of my "stuff" went
-> hn> into the trash bin.
->
-> Sort of a lost childhood. I know; I kept a few things of our girls that
-> they did in early school years but couldn't keep all. Most clothes were
-> passed on as they were outgrown; now I wish I'd kept a few more things.
-> But, that old bear of a weight allowance..................
->
Precisely. Most of my childhood "things"
were "passed on" as we moved from duty
station to duty station over the years.

-> -> HN> Yes, but when were you IN Germany?
-> ->  HN> I was in France between 1960 and
-> ->  HN> 1965...a whole lot less "amenities"
-> ->  HN> in those days!
->
-> -> IIRC, AFN-TV came to Europe in 1972. We were there from October, 1986
->  hn> to
-> -> July, 1992. Limited to one channel on AFN but could pick up German tv
on
-> -> the multi system set, then British version of AFN when we were in
-> -> Berlin.
->
-> hn> See even 11 years after we left you
-> hn> only had one station! ( way more than
->  hn> WE had though).
->
-> Be glad you had the radio--tho it would have been hard to do a cooking
-> demo on the order of Julia Child via radio.
->
Oh we were VERY glad to have the
radio...it was a major social tool
in those days! A "date" was often
going over to a girl's apartment and
sitting around the living room listening
to radio programs and "studying". There
were also the Teen club dances on weekends,
and the rather long bus rides from the main
base to the various housing areas.

-> -> -> Sounds like a sensible idea. Getting the goodies all lined up
-> -> -> (mentally)?
->
-> hn> Actually she came home feeling pretty
-> hn> good today so we went to one of
-> hn> her favorite places for an late
-> hn> lunch and she had one of her
->  hn> favorite burgers...now we're home
->
-> Good! We tried a new to us seafood place; best seafood we've had since
-> leaving GA! We will try to make it back there--and it's not in Raleigh
-> either. (G)
->
We have good local seafood...Anne
just does not partake of it! (grin).

-> hn> and probably will have a very light
-> hn> (if any) dinner and a bit of chocolate.
->
-> We had clam chowder for supper, with a tossed salad using some greens
-> that needed using.
->
Oddly enough, Anne does
like clam chowder!
->
-> -> HN> day to day is keeping me hopping pretty
-> ->  HN> much!
->
-> -> I understand. Sometimes on Saturday nights I wonder where the week
has
-> -> gone to.
->
->  hn> I'm retired...they're all saturday nights!
->  hn> (grin)
->
-> For me, Saturday night means getting ready for church the next morning,
-> and the start of another busy week.
->
Friday and Saturday nights are
the evenings we get to spend
together without worrying about
school the next morning. I enjoy
that!
->
-> -> HN> Anne talked to the radiologist and he
-> -> HN> says "no problems" have chocolate if
-> -> HN> you like, just don't over do it!
-> ->  HN> (and we don't)
->
-> -> Good--and this is the week to get her some special chocolates.
->
->  hn> 77% cacao and very good!
->
-> Rich! Steve did our usual February 15 thing & got 4 boxes of chocolates.
-> (G)
->
Anne has finished her bout of
radiation, but the effects are
still significant (very) and have
not begun to show signs of healing
yet, so we are postponing our valentine
celebration.
chat with you soon!
