That's not an unusual length of time to wait. As I told Michael,
retirees are the lowest rank on the totem pole when it comes to filling
the seats. When we were in HI and our daughter Rachel & her husband were
in Charleston, we debated doing a hop to see them. Decided against it,
not knowing the availability of one and how it would work with the time
we had available. Our SIL was stationed at Charleston AFB so we wouldn't
have even needed to find transportation to their apartment. And, rank
has no influence after retirement on preference for passengers; a
retired 4 star competes on equal footing with a (medically) retired PFC
or regular retired Staff Sergeant.

True on all accounts. We might have gotten a flight out OK while Steve
was active but taken a commercial flight back to make sure he got back
to work before his leave expired. Money saved by taking a hop could be
spent in airport eateries while waiting, thus not really saving much.
And, not all airports have USO lounges either.
