=====================
ML> Would something like nail polish perform the same function?
SH> I see Dave Drum replied and said it would be okay. The difference is
SH> the Locktite would go on the threads but nail polish would go on the
SH> head. It is up to you which one you use.

Thanks. As I will be seeing Lilli in a couple weeks, and
she uses nail polish (clear I think but don't really recall),
that might be the way to go. I wonder what a couple screws in
the bottom of the battery compartment have to do with the
connection to the screen ... .

ML> Oh yes, as soon as I found a set of jeweler's screwdrivers, I
ML> did in fact use one. The nail file was a child of necessity.
SH> Yes, necessity makes us do these things sometimes. I'm glad you do
 SH> have the proper tools.

I have full sets of decent tools, but I'm away from my base, or
whatever you'd call it, over 300 days a year, even more now that
I'm retired than when I was a professional musician. I've gotten
adept at making do with what's around rather than waiting weeks
for the right thing to be available! Frankly, I find this kind
of activity stimulating - probably keeps my brain from shutting
down altogether.

SH> A matched set can be handy. However, I think a reliable online backup
SH> (Carbonite, SpiderOak, DropBox, or other online service) might also be
SH> something to consider. You wouldn't have to lay out the price of two
 SH> machines.

The reason for a matched set over online backup would be in
case of catastrophic hardware failure, when I would want to
get back up as soon as possible with as short a ramp-up as
possible. Plus buying two cheap stripped-down but sturdy
boxes now wouldn't be that much more expensive than buying
one now and one later. For on-the-fly data backup, I e-mail
myself stuff. This is mostly every 2 weeks and consists of
correspondence (including FIDO) and stuff relating to
updates regarding my father's estate. I keep my passport
and prescription information on an e-mail to myself on GMail.
I think I'm fairly well covered. Hope so, anyhow.

Even though the online backup costs (unless you keep the
SH> backups to under 2 Gb, in which case SpiderOak and I think DropBox
SH> would be free), it would be a smaller amount and you wouldn't have to
SH> maintain two pieces of hardware when you only have need of one.

Looking at two boxes at $300-400 each, which though not
insignificant, isn't huge either.

SH> Probably because of the large base of XP that was in the business
SH> world. However, even business has its upgrade cycles. Eventually, XP
SH> will die. It may have been stable, but Windows 7 appears to be stable
 SH> also.

I just don't see it. They still make parts for Audis from the
1980s. Why not keep updates to XP coming?

ML> I really disliked Vista and have tried out Windows 7, which
ML> doesn't offer the user as much discretion. I'm sure there are
ML> ways under the hood, but it seems too tight to me, to the
ML> degree that one thing wrong will force you to take it to the
ML> shop, sort of like what obtains with a car computer.
SH> Given what I have seen, I don't think it would be as bad as you think.

I have the disadvantage of wanting to see what's going on: the
more Windowsy Windows gets, the more opaque it gets, and that
rubs me the wrong way. XP at least allowed me to see what was
behind the curtain, which Windows 7 makes obscure.

SH> These aren't dairy free. There is a place near us that has Apple Cider
SH> Doughnuts. This looks like it might be similar to what those are.

I can eat a certain amount of dairy with the help of the lactase
pills, which actually work fairly well. I have to be pretty careful
still, but if that nice piece of 8-year-old Jewett New York Cheddar
appeals, I needn't completely deny myself. Chocolate malt, that's
another question altogether (I did one of these and despite the
pills was sick for 2 days afterward).

      Title: Skordalia
 Categories: Greek, Sauces
   Servings: 6

      4 md Potatoes
      6 Cloves garlic (or more!)
    1/2 c Olive oil
    1/3 c White vinegar*
      1 pn Salt

*Note-- Lemon juice may be substituted for part of the white vinegar. Peel
potatoes, boil, then mash. Let cool. In blender or food processor, process
the garlic with a bit of the oil til almost paste-like. Transfer to
electric mixer bowl. Add potatoes, beating until mixture resembles a
paste. Gradually add remaining olive oil and vinegar/lemon juice, beating
thoroughly until well absorbed. Add salt, taste for seasoning, and beat
until the sauce is very thick and smooth, adding more vinegar if necessary.
Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
