=======================
Hi Hap,

 HN> Baseball team is on the road so I'm
 HN> trying to catch up on the echo!

And my last day or so before class starts Friday afternoon. Trying to
get healthy enough to be able to sit in class without hacking all the
time. The antibiotics should be kicking in by then.

-> -> type meal. Went back a few years later; they weren't as good as we
-> -> remembered. Part of it was, we'd just moved back to the mainland from
 HN> HI
-> -> and had gotten spoiled on good, cheap Asian there. (G)

->  HN> I don't mind splurging on a meal out
-> HN> now and then...and sometimes you get
-> HN> what you pay for.

-> We had to watch our pennies when eating out so we could afford groceries
-> for the family. For our anniversary we'd usually go to some place nice,
-> but not too pricy. When we were up in Tucson with the girls, we'd try to
-> go for something other than the McD's or other major chain fast food;
-> they liked the rice bowl places too. It was different from the usual
-> fast food but they were familiar enough with easy, quick sort of Asian
-> from some of my cooking.

 HN> True, When I was first in the Navy
 HN> and on my own, one of my aunts told
 HN> me to try to go out to a "formal"
 HN> restaurant at least once a month.

Smart lady! Not as many fast food joints at that time either.

 HN> She said it was important to eat
 HN> in a place with cloth napkins and
 HN> proper place settings, and it was
 HN> important to develop the sense of
 HN> being comfortable in those surroundings.

Very true; you never know when that knowledge will come in handy.

 HN> And now, Steve and you do not need
 HN> to scrimp as much as you did when
 HN> the kids were young.

They're not at home so we don't have to feed them. Now our problem is
mostly finding the time away from books, papers, classes, etc.

-> HN> Hopefully your wrists will hold out for
->  HN> many years yet!

-> I hope they do too; I don't want to have they fused. Haven't yet gotten
-> the referral for the specialist but hopefully soon so I can get them
-> checked out. Started working with a local Quilts of Valor (look them up)
-> group today & was in on their first presentation. As with the other
-> quilting groups I've worked with, the quilts go for a great cause. It's
-> also fun working with a group of ladies who share the love of quilting.

 HN> It is a good cause!
 HN> and it's always fun to get
 HN> together with like minded
 HN> folks!

Is it ever! Sitting there, running a sewing machine is fun. Had to show
some of them pictures on my phone of some of the quilts I've done. I'm
trying to convince one of the ladies at the farmer's market how easy it
is to sew squares together.

-> HN> She's in her mid 80's and is pretty
-> HN> frail, so I'm grateful for whatever
-> HN> she feels like doing.

-> I know the feeling; my dad is 90, mom is 83.

 HN> It simply becomes a matter of how much
 HN> they can actually do safely.

And not mixing up the gas & brake pedals in a parking lot. Dad said that
it appears that's what happened at the post office the other day. Nobody
was hurt but the front of the building took a beating.

-> As long as others are willingto go shopping with her, take her to the
-> doctor, etc. Does she cook for herself?

 HN> She still cooks, but not like she used to.

No family, no incentive to. My mom's has gone from bad to worse.

-> HN> Yep, and we did a lot of that. When
-> HN> her back got "tired" we'd head back
-> HN> to the hotel and rest as long as she
->  HN> needed.

-> Going out for an awesome meal or staying in and eating in a cozy
-> place--as long as you were together, the food was not important (as long
-> as you made sure she ate to keep her strength up).

 HN> We made it a point to find interesting
 HN> places to eat.

So what new ethnic cuisine did you try?

-> HN> and San Diego has a good system..but when
-> HN> her back is spasming, it's not the time
-> HN> to find a bus stop and wait for a bus then
-> HN> figure out the connections to get back to
-> HN> the hotel...quicker, easier, and much safer
->  HN> to get a cab.

-> I hear you there; I remember being out one time in Berlin and being hit
-> with a bad migraine. Had to get back home via public transportation; it
-> was bad. Had Steve get me a Coke & candy bar so the sugar & caffiene
-> would start to take the edge off of it. Now I carry my migraine med with
-> me.

 HN> No meds ever worked for my
 HN> migraines...glad they work
 HN> for someone!!

Newer ones don't even work? Try a heavy dose of B complex vitamins; I
was getting some nasty headaches in GA until Steve suggested that. It
helped, considerably.

Catch you later,
Ruth
