=================
Hi Nancy,

NB> RH>> With a whole grain diet, I don't need the chocolate for the
NB> middle RH>> reason. Numbers one and three tho are pretty good reasons
 NB> to keep it RH>> around. (G)
NB> NB>> I don't NEED it for the middle reason, but once in a while, one
NB> does NB>> see the helpful results... :) All good reasons to keep it

RH> I keep it around to keep the asthma under control.

 NB> Another good reason.

I guess I slacked off a bit in my consumption; I'm fighting bronchitis
right now. At the point where eating is a neccessity but not enjoyable.

NB> RH>> My sympathies to your neighbor with the broken elbow; mine still
NB> likes NB>> progressing well... she's getting back her range of motion
NB> pretty NB>> well, and everything seems to be healing very well.

RH> Good news; the elbow has to twist into so many different positions
RH> that the more range of motion it gets back, the better. I have almost

NB> She's still getting some therapy on the arm, and she's using it almost
NB> normally now. It could stand to get a little stronger, but that will
NB> come with time as she exercises and uses it.

Hopefully so. I still have some problems with the strength from time to
time, probably because of the bum wrist. Use of it, range of motion, is
a lot better than I initially expected--and even surprised the therapist
at how much ROM I got back.

RH> get. Saw my primary care doctor this week; she put in a consult to have
RH> the wrist looked at. Between the break & 2 surgeries on it plus the
RH> elbow break, surgery & nerve damage, she wants to see if there's
RH> anything else going on in there. I'm going to be using my rotary cutter
RH> quite a bit in the next few weeks so I want the wrist to be well
RH> checked out, see if anything can be done for it.

NB> Did you find out anything useful?

Still waiting--the referral was lost on the primary care reception desk
for about a month. I finally got the referral, called today for an
appointment and the first one I could get is May 23.

NB> NB>> What's keeping her in rehab is mostly their worry about her
NB> NB>> overall ability to take care of herself semi-independently.

RH> I can see that; if my dad goes first, there's no way my mom could live
RH> by herself. She's a danger in the kitchen but Dad is there most of the
RH> time to keep half an eye on her (if he doesn't do the job to begin
 RH> with).

NB> Gwen has aides to do the kitchen stuff now, and the cleaning, etc, as
NB> well as helping her with her personal care. The rehab place was being

That'ss good--gives her a sense of independence, even if she does have
almost round the clock help.

NB> over-cautious... After their impassioned report on her inability to do
NB> anything at all for herself, and need for 24/7 care and supervision,
NB> we set up a schedule to cover the remaining hours that she didn't have
NB> aides or day program, and got her home instead of relegating her to a
NB> regular nursing home bed, which they recommended. It's been yet more
NB> of a reason I've not been here, but now that she's home again, and the
NB> schedule is working itself out, I finally have a little time for this

Sounds like either the rehab place wanted to make some money or they
just underestimated her ability to be self sufficient (with aides as
needed). You're there almost every day, but not the whole day now?

NB> again... :) Gwen's daughter Jenny was doing some of the coverage
NB> until she went back into the hospital herself, the granddaughter
NB> (Melinda) is carving out of her busy schedule time to spend to cover
 NB> hours, and
NB> Richard pinchhits for the little gaps. A good part of the problem at
NB> the rehab place was that they really weren't helping her to regain her
NB> independence, but rather were doing things that stifled it. She's
NB> learning some of it back now that she is home.

That's good for her in more ways than one. I presume she "supervises"
the meal prep and such like? We're planning to visit my folks this
summer so I have to start thinking of what to do for meals that Steve
and I will fix. Much as we'd like to, can't do any grilling or we'd be
visited by the local bear(s) that night.

RH> replaced some dull, worn out knives, peelers and such like with new,
RH> sharp ones; they insisted on keeping the old ones on hand so I suspect
RH> they're the ones getting used. Also need to see if they've kept up on
RH> the dishwasher maintainence and done anything more toward getting a
 RH> ramp put in.

NB> Always things to keep up with... As to the old knives and peelers,
NB> they are no doubt familiar with the feel of them in the hand... I know
NB> I had a hard time finding a paring knife that I liked as well as the
 NB> one I'd
NB> used for years... I know all about dull knives being dangerous and
NB> all that... but I do understand the reluctance to give up the
 NB> familiar... :)

I'm half tempted to bring some of my own kitchen stuff. (G) We did get
an acrylic cutting board; I don't like cutting on counter tops (as my
mom does) or wooden boards for meats. She's got a butcher block top on
one of her counters but it's probably not sterile. She started fussing
when I showed her the new board; I just told her that it's for me to use
whenever I visit. (G)
