======================
Hi Michael,

 ML> sisters:
RH> And even now, that's a hard one to treat effectively. I've a sister
RH> who had problems in her teens; she's functional now but the effects of
 RH> it are noticeable.

ML> Not that it makes any difference, but I wonder if it's
ML> effects or residuum. If my brother were to get significantly

Hard to tell; she was on some pretty heavy meds for a while in her teens
and early 20s. Don't know how much of that affected her either but she
definately needed them. She conned her doctor into taking her off them
at one point, then crashed big time--had to go back into the hospital
for close to a year. First time around she was in for, IIRC, about 4
months. I was first in college, then married and living in NC for most
of this so I don't remember the exact timing of things.

ML> better (I don't hold out too high hopes) in the processing
ML> department, would the memories and habits be too heavy to
ML> ignore, and would his life still continue to suffer because
 ML> of that.

Hard to say but sounds likely that a good bit of it would still remain
in some form or another.

 ML> mothers:
RH> That's true of just about anything but I guess your mom was affected
RH> extra hard by some of what was thrown at her.

ML> I admit that a lot was thrown at her, and I admit that
ML> there's major nutso in our family history, but she seemed
ML> really over the top in her looniness, and it was difficult
ML> to tolerate, let alone like, her.

And her problems didn't allow her to realise that medication might help.
She might have been an entirely differet person had she been able to
accept the help she could get. Hard to second guess after the fact tho.

RH> Sounds like my mom; she doesn't like to take the pills that could ease
RH> her arthritis pain as she's afraid of becoming addicted. It's clear
RH> that if Dad goes first, she can't live by herself. What isn't clear is
RH> how we/she will handle that when the time comes.

ML> But in your mom's case, if the pain gets too too awful, she
ML> might be convinced to take medications. With a mentally ill
ML> person, the delusions may include that drugs aren't necessary
ML> or won't do any good. Or are poison.

Don't I know! See above. My mom does take the pain meds from time to
time but they're ones that are most effective if a fairly consistent
level is in the body. One pill every few months isn't going to give her
the relief she needs. Back in 1990 she had an artificial shoulder put in
one arm but the technology wasn't too far along on them so she never got
the mobility etc she expected. (I think she may have expected too much
in relation to the amount of damage there was.) She never got the other
shoulder done and never considered the information Steve sent her a
couple of years ago regarding a new technique to modify/improve the
artificial shoulders. As a result, she's in constant pain when she could
be doing something about it.

ML> By the way, did I tell you that simple Tylenol has improved
ML> my life this week so much I hardly have words - the crick in
ML> my neck has nearly disappeared, and I feel pretty darn good.
ML> It had never really worked for me before, and I marvel for
ML> the first time at modern 20th century analgesic pharmacology.

No, you hadn't told me--good that something relatively simple is so
effective for you. Sometimes the simpler meds, with a change in the body
chemistry, can work wonders.

 ML> brothers:
RH> Being a later in life baby probably didn't help much either in that
RH> regard. He didn't have his siblings at home to take some of the
 RH> "heat".

ML> A point I've made repeatedly: there but for the grace of my
ML> sister go I. Taking part of the heat (though until I left
ML> altogether she got a lot less than I did), bouncing ideas of
ML> sanity off each other, and uniting against a common enemy
ML> (which didn't happen either until I left the household).

But you had her, which was good. Did she get you into trying all kinds
of new foods or did you influence her? As I recall, she enjoyed eating
as much as you did.

ML> flying on 9/11 every year since the attack). Other than
ML> that, to my knowledge, he never leaves the Maryland-DC
ML> area, though he used to go to Virginia to work.
RH> Somewhat of the agoraphobia there. But, he's not totally housebound.

ML> Same with me, hard though that may be to believe.

I'm more the "sit back and observe at first, then get involved" unless
it's an area I'm really comfortable in. I can teach in various areas but
I prefer to do it in small, rather than large groups so I can have more
one on one interaction.

 ML> ==
RH> Soyou say. Beets me how you get in such pickles.
ML> It's my bread and butter. My fault - when looking for
 ML> a traveling companion, I pick a Lilli.
RH> But your jokes are getting rather silly.

 ML> I can't help it - they come out willy-nilly.

At least you're not a hill-billy.

Catch you later,
Ruth
