Ärende: A bush supper

June 21 is of course the summer solstice and the longest day of the
year in the northern hemisphere. It has always been an excuse to
party in Yellowknife: we have a downtown street festival called
Midnight Madness and a 24 hour marathon golf tournament on a lake
beach course with sand fairways among other things.
 
Now the French have always had a bonus holiday, Saint Jean Baptiste
Day on June 24th and the English have Queen Victoria's birthday on
May 24th. Recently Canada invented another summer holiday, National
Aboriginal Day on June 21st, to honour our third national founding
people.

It gets paid lip service elsewhere but is a real statutory holiday
in the NWT. Everything shuts down for a day. Roslind and I spent the
afternoon in the company of her sister Sandra and Sandra's husband
Matthew (who is a full blooded Chippewyan from around here) and some
of their friends including an Inuit lady who worked where Sandra
does. We went a little way up the Yellowknife River to a spot just
off the road where the Akaitcho had set up a little park. There was
a bandstand with drummers and dancers, a caribou chili and bannock
booth and a fish fry tent among other things. We had a campsite off
to the side where we set up a tent and a smoker/grill. The meal
reflected the setting and the day; Matthew was head chef this time,
not me. The meal was a carnivore's delight: caribou dry meat and
beef jerky for starters, next was hot smoked Inconnu (a northern
relative of the whitefish) split and cleaned but with heads and
tails on, cooked over the coals, and then caribou burgers, caribou
short ribs, smokies on buns and pork spareribs, all barbecued. The
only vegetables in sight were ketchup, mustard and relish for the
burgers and smokies. It was a dry event so we drank cold, pure river
water. Everything was extremely tasty even the dry meat (which is an
acquired taste). There's nothing like a bit of smoke to make fish
and meat taste even more appealing than it already does.
