Not having much to do, and culinary adventurousness being
curtailed by the condition of the patient, I've tasted a
bunch of things, mostly fluids bought to vary Bill's
experience and encourage him to hydrate. He loves Gatorade,
so it's not all that difficult.

Gatorade G2 products

I tasted four varieties, lemon-lime, grape, orange, and glacier
freeze, all sweetened with stevia. The first three tasted as
you'd expect, like thinned-down Kool-Aid with some salt thrown
in. Glacier freeze, not so - it was blue, and with a name like
that, you'd figure something minty cooling, but it actually
had almost no flavor, perhaps a negative flavor even. The
closest I can come to putting words to it would be blue
raspberry without the raspberry and not so much of the blue.
The stevia provides a watery weak sweetness, even though it
is aided and abetted by a small quantity of sugar.

Adirondack products

root beer - the cheapness was the only appeal. Inauthentic
rootbeery flavor, with too much ?licorice and a slight after
whiff of artificial maple and vanilla. Curiously watery
mouthfeel. A rather poor product.

citrus frost - I think this is a knockoff of Squirt; anyhow,
it has a decent grapefruit peel aroma and a nondescript
citrus (lemon-lime-grapefruit) flavor. I'd get it again even
if it weren't so cheap.

A couple other soft drinks

Polar cream soda - extremely disappointing, almost no
flavor at all, and again no body. It would have been better
off with HFCS.

Gosling's ginger beer - pretty spicy, enough to make me
gag when I took too large a sip. Also very sweet. A bit
of a lemony nose and taste. Quite pleasant. I found,
surprisingly enough, that it didn't take well to rum,
though I admit that I used Bacardi 8 rather than Gosling's.

Delicious and less delicious things from T.J. Maxx

Mazzetti balsamic vinegar - I rather liked this, finding it
pleasantly sweet-tart, with a round fruity flavor. It wasn't
too acid for me - that's the general Internet criticism of
it, -, and it diluted well (most low-end balsamics lose their
character when diluted).

Tendre EVOO (Spain) - a huge disappointment, and it was not
cheap. Thickish with a greasy mouthfeel and not so much the
pepperiness of fresh good olive oil but an acrid unpleasant
bite. I am wondering if I have encountered a case of
counterfeit food. I looked it up, and the ostensible
manufacturer, Almazara el Tendre, is apparently reputable.
This product, labeled something like reserve selection, is
certainly not. Boys and girls, can you say Chinese knockoff?
I knew you could.

Olivari Mediterranean olive oil (not EV) - thie label claims
it was named Product of the Year by "Consumer Survey of Product
Innovation 2011." I looked it up - what we bought was indeed
named Product of the Year. The slightly nifty pop-up spout
on the bottle, not the olive oil itself, it turns out. The oil
was quite ordinary, with scant flavor.
