Ärende: Another Ithaca Farmer's Market
======================================
Hi Janis,

 JK> > Hot sauce

>> I'll check the recipe and see.. It seemed safe just from the taste I

JK> > Habenero peppers, carrots, onion, lime juice are the main
JK> ingredients. > Some habbies can be super hot; these were a mixed bag
JK> we'd had in the > freezer for several months.

JK> The only thing that might cause him problems would be if any of those
JK> or other ingredients contained HFCS or any corn product in the canned
JK> or bottled variety.. If the above and all other ingredients were
JK> fresh, not bottled, I doubt there would be a problem. If you look at

We used all fresh ingredients, nothing canned, bottled or whatever
except the vinegar. But, check out the recipe to verify it's Eion safe;
I don't want him to have trouble with it.

JK> say bottles of relish, pickles, etc., even some of those contain it -

I know; I've become much more of a label reader over the last few years.
HFCS has been on the list of "won't buys" for years, now I also check
the carb counts on products. Making it myself will ensure knowing what
goes into it but commercial products will give me the carb counts I need
to know. So, I'm now checking the commercial products for a rough idea
of how many carbs are in the home made ones.

JK> Anyway, I'll hunt up the
JK> recipe just to see what went into your hot sauce :)

I think it's all safe but you know better than I do what's OK for him.

>> had, but better to check :) He came close to eating a whole jar of
>> your pickles though (smile).

 JK> > Kid has good taste. (G)

JK> hehe He loved them, that's for sure.

Always good to see a youngster appreciating good food. He wasn't raised
on the fast food so many kids today are so he's learned what real, good
food tastes like.

>> Michael today.. it's supposed to be a cooler day tomorrow.. today was
>> horrible.. you wonder how many 90F degree days there can be left :)

JK> > We had another 90+ day today. It's only supposed to be in the upper
 JK> 80s > tomorrow

JK> Ah sounds like us here.. it's 9:22AM and it's already 75F.. I woke up
JK> around 8:30AM this morning and could feel the heat already building in

We had a high of 87 (at the Raleigh airport, probably a tad cooler in
Wake Forest) yesterday, a few degrees warmer today. I'm wearing jeans
instead of light weigh pants as the latter wouldn't be warm enough. Nice
thunderstorms both yesterday & today--saw a partial rainbow coming out
of church tonight.

JK> our upstairs bedroom.. The downstairs does stay so much cooler in this
 JK> crazy weather :)

Heat rises, cold air sinks. We've got a single level place so don't have
that problem.

JK> > so I think I'll do the oven roasted veggies ratatoullie for
JK> > supper. Steve will grill some chicken (that we were supposed to have
JK> > tonight, had Mexican instead) to go with it. This is a recipe I
JK> pulled > from the local paper, says to make grits (optional cheesy) to
JK> serve it > with. I'll do some form of pasta instead; we've got a lot
JK> on the shelf > and limiting portions means it's going to last a lot
 JK> longer.

JK> Sounds good and great that you can control things somewhat with diet.
JK> We had sausage and peppers and fresh corn from the Farmer's market
 JK> last night.

Diet and insulin--my pancreas had totally shut down production. I didn't
have enough time to roast the tomatoes as long as I wanted to (had to
eat) before doing the other veggies. Then the chicken took a bit longer
than Steve figured so I had to shut the oven off after the other veggies
were done. Served it with rice instead of pasta and was told that the
recipe was a keeper.

 JK> ===Sausage and Peppers===
 JK> 1 1/2 lbs. Sweet Italian Sausage
 JK> 2 or 3 tablespoons water
JK> 2 Med. sized Italian green Peppers (or bell peppers) sliced 1 large
 JK> vidalia onion, sliced
 JK> 2 cloves garlic, chopped
 JK> 1 teaspoon basil
JK> optional: Touch of olive oil

I'll add some sliced mushrooms to the mix as well.

>> I checked our Wed. market beforehand since it had rained that
>> morning.. the folks putting it on said it would be there rain or no
>> rain :) Luckily for us, by 4pm the sun was blazing and had dried up
>> any hint of the earlier rain..

JK> > Ours goes on unless the rain is a heavy thunderstorm with winds or
 JK> > there's a serious threat of a hurricane coming thru. They've had to
JK> do > some very fast take downs when the weather has turned on them.

JK> I bet.. we were a little surprised that the Elmira area had a tornado
JK> last week.. luckily that's quite a ways from here though. When that
JK> happened, we had lots of drenching rain and thunderstorms..

We're having a spell of that as well; the weather radio goes off just
about every day in mid to late afternoon with warnings in the area.

JK> Indian Masala filled with potato curry:

>> > Sounds good but I'd have to watch the carbs from the potatoes.

>> Yes, I can understand that. I filled a number of them with a brie
>> like cheese we picked up at the farmer's market, as a snack the other
>> day.. that was great :)

JK> > That sounds good; cheese is a carb free or very low carb snack for
JK> me so > I've been eating more of it lately. It also gives me a dairy
 JK> serving
JK> > since we don't drink regular milk.

JK> I'd see if I could find a breakdown of carbs in the dosas since they
JK> are generally made with rice, ground very fine. I've been using
JK> ground brown rice flour and self-ground lentils and had good results
JK> with that as well. The dosas are poured in the pan and then spread
JK> out to a very very think pancake, but it's still carbs .. :( I looked
JK> around on the web, and did see some "low-carb" recipes for Dosa
JK> pancakes though :) Some of these were filled with vegetable, chicken,
JK> or shrimp curries.. looks interesting.

They do sound good; I'll have to do some searching. The Lowe's (grocery
store) where we do a lot of our shopping was clearing out a lot of their
Indian foods so we got a number of things for half off. They said that
they're making room for some new products (guess Indian isn't much of a
seller up in WF) so we benefitted. (G)

 JK> Dosa fillings:
>> The chutney was great :) You can put anything in the dosas you want.
>> At the farmer's market, the woman making the dosas had the potato
>> curry and another type filling that I can't remember much of.. (g).

JK> > Thanks, and glad you enjoyed the chutney. Last year was the first
JK> time I > made it, may not be the last.

JK> I'll have to try a dosa with the chutney filling.. should be good I'd
 JK> think :)

Can't see why not. Let me know what you think.
