Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> It's a possibility. They might be able to get some help in
NB> funding NB>> some of the redo, especially in light of the latest

RH> Funding is no problem, it's getting my dad to realise it needs to be
RH> done and making arraingements to get it done that is the issue.

NB> If he's now thinking that it might be needed, you are part-way there.

He's realising the need now. Just wish that it had been put in place
several years ago but, hindsight is always 20/20.

NB> NB>> social workers at the rehab might be able to help put that
 NB> together.

RH> Don't know what the local hospital rehab offers in that line. It's a
RH> small town hospital, community owned at one time but sold some years
RH> ago to a larger hospital in Kingston. The larger one runs specialty
RH> clinics up in Margaretville about once a month; I don't know if the
RH> rehab folks are local or from the Kingston hospital.

NB> Either way, they should have the resources and contacts to be able to
 NB> help put things together.

Let's hope so, anyway. Took a brief look at the web site for the
hospital today but didn't have too much time to poke around. I'll look
more later.

NB> NB>> that temporary ramps are available at med supply places, and
 NB> that

RH> Don't think I've seen them at the local ned supply place but I suspect
RH> they could be special ordered. I'd want a permanent ramp tho; one's
RH> been needed for years but my folks have resisted getting one put in.

NB> A temporary (or better, moveable) one is a quicker install, and can be
NB> used until a permanent one is put in...

True, and a temporary one beats none.

NB> NB>> there are options for wheelchairs/transport chairs... the latter
NB> being NB>> less bulky, so more maneuverable... Also the "Scooter
 NB> Store"/hoverchair NB>> varieties...

RH> Mom can't even use the "ride'em" carts (as I call them) at stores, her
RH> motor co-ordination is not good at all. I doubt Dad would feel
 RH> comfortable with her on a scooter/hoverchair.

NB> Then it's back to the wheelchair or transport chair options...

It'll make working in the kitchen harder but Dad is talking about her
giving up cooking anyway. Hopefully the woman he will be hiring to do
the cooking will work to keep Mom's diabetes under better control.

RH> I'm strongly suspecting the stroke. One good thing about her being in
RH> the hospital--she should be eating a proper diabetic diet. I rough
RH> figured that for breakfast alone she got at least a good 70 (or more)
RH> carbs at home; she should have between 45 and 60 carbs per meal.

NB> She might be getting a better diabetic diet in the hospital... on the
NB> other hand, I've not been all that impressed with hospital diets when
NB> it comes to special needs, although I will admit they've gotten better
NB> about making things nutritious and reasonably tasty.

If the kitchen understands how to put together a diabetic friendly diet,
there should be no problem. Question is, do they understand? Mom also
fills out a menu card every day, don't know if it's geared to be a
diabetic diet or one for the whole hospital. If the latter, then I
suspect she's eating high carb.

RH> And for that we are grateful. Deborah and Logan will be visiting for a
RH> few days next month, as will my brother from Florida. Logan will keep
RH> Dad busy. (G) Don't know if he's still cooking for himself or
RH> someone is doing it for him now.

NB> Logan will give your Dad something else to focus on, too... a good
 NB> thing... ;)

For sure! Dad's going to need his track shoes--that kid can move!

NB> NB>> Maybe it could be suggested that such be done sometime soon...?
NB> Or at NB>> least ask if it has been done (that might get some action
NB> if it hasn't NB>> been done yet). Given the lack of progress in
NB> therapy, it does seem NB>> to be indicated...

RH> Seems they would think so anyway. I sort of wish I had the name/phone
RH> or e-mail address of her doctor up there so I could find out more about
RH> her status (and not upset Dad).

NB> You might be able to get the name of the doctor from your dad, and
NB> take it from there... or ask about it from the nurses at the
 NB> hospital...

Or go back on to the web site; there aren't that many doctors in
Margaretville.

NB> NB>> And prayers as well for you and Steve, of course... :)
NB> Hopefully the NB>> wrist surgery will make things a lot better for
 NB> you. :)

RH> Thanks, it'll be rough for the initial healing but hopefully I'll have
RH> better use in of it (with fewer pain meds) in the future. I've got

NB> One can certainly hope. :)

Considering how much I use the hand/wrist, some relief is better than
what I'm dealing with now.

RH> some meals stashed in the freezer so Steve will just have to heat them
RH> up. He may get ambitious and bake the ham too.

NB> Good to have a reasonably self-reliant man in the house... ;)

And he even does dishes! I was out for a while today; when he came home
from class, he made up the iced tea I'd not gotten around to before I
left. Then he cleaned up his lunch dishes.

NB> NB>> ... Love is like marmalade - both sweet and bitter at the same
 NB> time

RH> And you can get into a jam with it--a pretty sticky situation if
 RH> you're not careful. (G)
