I don't blame them.  Our refugees from political unrest are much more
recent.  Their countries of origin are mainly SE Asia, Sri Lanka,
Afghanistan and the Middle East.  Our earlier "boat people" were
mainly British convicts that America refused to take, which became
spread along the east and west coasts of Australia.  South Australia
was the only respectable state.  Wealthy British land-owners were
given large land grants, and then chartered ships to bring farmers and
miners out to work the land and make them rich.  Sometimes it worked.
A lot of my McRae ancestors, from the Scottish village of Tomatin,
bought or chartered a ship of that name and came to South Australia.
Another lot went to NZ and gained a reputation for the high quality of
the whisky they made there - illegally, of course.

As several of my Echo friends have hastened to point out to me, it was
a tornado.  At age of 6 or so, I didn't know the difference...  And as
far as I can see, your hurricanes are very similar to our cyclones
except in one respect; they rotate in the opposite direction.
