-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Nancy and I had been staying in Jogja and took a taxi to Borobudur.
ML> How long does that take, an hour or so? I presume the roads
ML> are better than they were when you were there (though we
ML> discovered that 15-20 mph was a generous speed estimate for
ML> the roads in Cambodia, so some third worldness does persist

About an hour, I think. From memory, the roads were narrow, but good.
After all, Stamford Raffles was running the place for quite a while,
and was instrumental in exposing Borobudur. When we were there more
repair work was being done on it, as it was starting to collapse
outward. It is basically a small mountain with carved stone facings.
The UNESCO intention was to put some sort of foundation underneath it.

GJ> Before we returned the driver asked if I minded if he brought a durian
GJ> back with him. At that time I didn't know what a durian was, so I
GJ> happily agreed. I soon found out.
ML> And to your everlasting pleasure.

Not immediately. It was another year or so before I screwed up my
nerve enough to try one, in Lae. That was my awakening!

GJ> In that ancient Javanese capital, (the name of which has had several
GJ> spellings since it was Dutch) the main feature is the old Sultan's
GJ> palace, the Kraton. When I was there, 41 years ago, most of it was
GJ> open to tourists, and there were gamelan concerts.

ML> I thought of going there, but I don't care for gamelans, as
ML> they produce frequency difference beats that hurt my head.

Perhaps that is because your sense of pitch is so closely attuned to
the European musical scale, that it cannot adjust to the completely
different, non-linear scales used by Indonesian music. The Javanese
gamelans are somewhat different from the Balinese, and the music is
generally played faster.

GJ> gongs are tuned as sets, there are variations between gamelans, so
GJ> they cannot be played simultaneously.

ML> Well ... I don't think that playing them together would
ML> make worse sounds than they already do.

Ah, you Westerners...

GJ> There was a 737 crash there several years ago, when the
GJ> pilot decided to land at far too high a speed. He was found guilty of
GJ> dangerous flying and imprisoned for 2 or 3 years.
ML> I looked into this, and the imprisonment actually didn't
ML> take, as the conviction was somehow quashed (according to
ML> crikey.com.au, which, given its distinguished name, must
ML> be your nation's most reliable news source), despite the

"crikey.com.au" is certainly a reliable source. I had forgotten the
pilot's appeal.

ML> guy coming in for approach at double the acceptable speed
ML> and the co-pilot warning him of that fact. Also the JOG
ML> airport is defective in its safety facilities, which sort
ML> of concerns me as we are flying a dodgy airline into there
ML> in order to avoid Jakarta.

Why avoid Jakarta? I have been through that airport a few times, most
recently in 2005 and apart from injuring myself by slipping when
getting onto the International - Domestic shuttle bus, I managed OK.
You just have to remember to hold sufficient Rupiahs to pay for
airport departure tax. In 2005, it was Rp100,000 ($10) from CGK
International, and Rp20,000 from domestic. At Jambi, in Sumatra it
was only Rp8,000, paid at Mandala Airlines. When overnighting in
Jakarta I have stayed at the Le Meridien, which was as good as any
hotel that I have been in, anywhere.

Although I haven't flown into JOG, the airport at Jambi (DJB) was
"interesting", being of the switchback variety. If the plane was
lightly loaded it leaped into the air at the second hump, otherwise at
the third. Landing was exciting if the pilot mis-judged the landing
and hit an uphill section. What airline are you travelling on?

 ML> ==

ML> I still think there will be a positive net by the disappearance
ML> of this technology and its adherents.

But you have to accept that it will not disappear until it has been
replaced by an even more intrusive technology. There is talk here
of putting everyone's doctors' medical records into a common
data-base, "for the patients' good", of course! An alternative is for
you to wear a tiny implant with all that information available to
anyone with a suitable scanner. It is done for dogs and cats, so why
not humans?

GJ> Invasion of privacy may hurt feelings, but violent injustice suffered
GJ> by civilians at the point of a rocket launcher is far more painful.

ML> Invasion of privacy is one of the most important differences
ML> between a totalitarian government and a nontotalitarian one.
ML> There are all sorts of coercive regimes that mostly eschew
 ML> violent injustice.

Young Prince Harry has been a recent victim of the camera phone, and
now has to pay the price. Her Majesty was not amused at his
stripping. Now he is being sent back to Afghanistan.
